Following on from my recent post on installing the GDE tune and a couple of CFT pipes, I have just pulled the MAP sensor and the EGR pipe and glad I did. Our Jeep has about 51,000 miles now and does not see much in the way of city driving, so yours may well be much worse than what this was.
This is a very simple job, about five minutes to remove both. Here are the details so that even if you don't enjoy tinkering with engines, it is a very simple service and your Jeep will thank you.
Now I realize that the GDE tune switches off the EGR but I wanted it clean and figured I should also check the MAP sensor at the same time.
All that's needed is an 8mm and 10mm wrench or small socket and a 40T torque tool. These are available in fold out tools or individual socket style heads - see pics.
Also make sure you get a can of CRC MAS Air Flow Sensor Cleaner or similar. DO NOT try and clean it with Brake Clean or anything else unless you know what you're doing. This is a very delicate sensor, and the slightest damage to it will leave the Jeep inoperable. Be gentle with it!
Told you it looks like granddad's tennis sock!
After pulling off the Jeep engine cover and the rubber block on the passenger side, you will see a thick pipe wrapped in what looks like your grandfathers tennis sock. This pipe is attached by two 8mm bolts at one end and two 10mm at the other. It takes the fumes and exhaust from your poor Jeep and stuffs it back down its throat. Remove the 4 bolts and carefully remove the pipe from the vehicle. I say carefully because chances are it will be caked in carbon deposit and burnt oil and you don't want this crap falling all over the engine. Put the caked end into a can and spray it liberally with MAF sensor cleaner, or you can soak it in something like Liqi Moly Diesel Purge. Let it soak for a while, and it's a good idea to spray some cleaner down the inside of the pipe as well.
pic - here is the MAP sensor, right at the back of the engine - 40T torque head bolt.
While this is soaking, get your 40T torque tool and undo the single bolt that holds the MAP sensor in (see photo). There is a cable harness attached, so gently loosen the yellow plastic lock tab and lift the black plastic tab up until you can separate the lead from the sensor. The sensor will more than likely have a nasty carbon build up on it too, so get your can of cleaner and give it a good blast. Then let it soak a bit - best not to get the harness connector end submerged in the cleaner.
pic - you really don't want this in your engine...
Now go back to the ERG pipe and wipe off all the crud. You may need to brush it and give it another go with the cleaner. I also blew mine out with compressed air, but that's not really necessary. Dry it off, you may need to replace the two cable ties around the sock as the heat will have cooked them, and refit the pipe and snug up the bolts.
Now GENTLY clean the MAP sensor, I used a bit of welding wire, but even a tooth pick or very soft brush will do. Just remember to be gentle with it! Once again, I dried mine off with a soft blast of air, and then you are ready to refit it. Snug the T40 bolt up, but don't over tighten it. Clip the sensor cable back in to place, making sure the tab on the underside is fully seated, then clip the yellow lock tab back into place.
pic - Looks a bit different now!
Refit the rubber block and press your engine cover back on and you're good to go!
Personally I use either half a can of the Liqui Moly or a good dose of Stanadyne Diesel additive every few tank fulls, especially in the winter, which should help keep everything clean. If you are not running the GDE Tune, you might want to perform this service regularly, as it wont take long to gum everything up again, especially if you have had the Emissions Recall done.
