Exhaust Filter 100% Full - See Dealer
Service Electronic Throttle Control

Item needed
AlfaOBD phone application (Currently $49)
Compatible OB2 Scanner. I use the BAFX sold on Amazon ($23)

1. With the ignition on (vehicle not running) clear fault codes using AlfaOBD app.
-The EVIC should now display something similar to Continue driving at
Highway Speeds to Remedy Issue

2. In AlfaOBD app, select "DPF Regeneration Enabling" and select START

3.In AlfaOBD app, select "Particulate filter Regeneration"

4. Start vehicle and immediately select START "Particulate filter Regeneration"

When the stationary regen starts, the vehicle will idle at 2,000rpm and then eventually go to 2,500rpms. The EVIC display counted down in 10% increments from 100% to 50% for the DEF filter level. At 50% the regen was completed. The entire regen process took 25 minuets.

The "Service Electronic Throttle Control" was still displayed on the EVIC. I shut the vehicle off and then cleared the fault codes again.

On my AlfaOBD app, you must follow this sequence for a manual regen:
'Engine'
'Diesel Bosch EDC17C49 >MY2013'
'DPF Regeneration Enabling' performs a moving regen during next drive cycle,
'Particulate Filter Regeneration' performs a parked regen when coolant is over 140f

No way to pull over, initiate a moving regen and pull away and it does it's thing as if it did it automatically? My problem is I sometimes get just about to my destination and it comes on as programmed and then tells me to "continue to drive". Since I monitor DPF I could initiate it a bit early in these situations so it could be complete by the time I get to my destination. Save time & save fuel. Thanks.

I'm a total noob with my Jeep, but can I get a quick explanation of how regens work? I know the technical side (used to work for an after-treatment company for commercial vehicles), but wasn't sure how these regen warnings work with the Jeep. I've driven mine for over a month and a couple thousand miles and haven't noticed any regen messages or even know when a regen is happening? I did notice one day the idle was really high for a while and I thought that was odd. Was it doing a regen? How do you know when a regen is in progress?

#13 ·
Regens silently work in the background without notice for those that regularly do highway driving. You'll know your vehicle has undergone regen with the heightened smell emanating from the exhaust.

For those that are unable to do long drives on a regular basis, there is a forced regen message that will prompt to drive at highway speeds to complete one as the DPF filter is nearly full at that time. If this is ignored, you may have to let the dealer complete the regen manually.

I actually tried to regen at 1,500 rpm stationary and honestly got tired after 15 minted just sitting in the car trying to throttle the pedal. I decided I prefer to drive on the highway. ?

OK I need to ask a question. First of all I can not believe how much you have to be a tech to own one of these vehicles. It's crazy. I have the fuse box jump wire for those 200 mile to no start when I'm 500 miles from any dealer. What a dumb ass thing. I also carry a scanner for getting rid of codes that are false. Now I need this "AlfaOBD App" to do manual Regens because the AEM might fill my filter faster. Gees. So what is this AlfaOBD?
Is it something I buy? I'm clueless here. I also just own a flip phone. No need for anything else, but my wife has a smart phone. Please help, I'm about ready to go on a 4000 mile trailer/camping trip. It's really sad that I have to worry about this stuff.

THANKS!

Couple of things, and the other guys can correct me if I'm wrong since I'm still new to the EcoDiesel...

  1. AlfaOBD is mostly for customizing some vehicle settings and doing diagnostics. Sound like this isn't something you'll really have much use for. It is an app that you purchase (directly from their website) for either Android devices or Windows PC. I have it on my Mac that runs Windows and it works well. There is a very in depth thread on the Ram Forums for this, but it is probably way more than you care to get into anyway.
  2. From my understanding of the AEM (I haven't gotten it done yet), the only thing you may use more of is the DEF, which is independent of how quickly the DPF fills up. It isn't 100% clear on this, but since FCA got his for excessive NoX emissions, whatever they do for the fix shoulnd't (theoretically) affect the DPF, since DPFs filter out the particulates and not the NoX. The Urea/DEF is what neutralizes the NoX in conjunction with an SCR. I used to be an engineer for diesel aftertreatment but it's been a few years so I'm going off my terrible memory :D
  3. You should be fine on your road trip, as the manual regens (from what the guys are saying above) are only necessary if you do a lot of short drives and you fill the DPF before it has ideal conditions to run automatic regens (like highway driving). In my case, I drive 35 miles each way to work and most of it is on 55 or 65 mph speed limit highways so I've never ran into any regen issues; in fact as I stated above I never knew it was running regens! So if you're on a long road trip, you should be fine for regens. Just make sure your DEF is topped off and you'll be good.
  4. Curious, what is the fuse box jump wire mod?

DCSport: There are 2 pins in the fuse box that if you pull out the relay and attach one of the pins with a wire and then touch the other pin the Jeep will start. Disconnect wire immediately. I would have to do this every time I turned off the vehicle if I got past the 200 mile to no start nonsense. EPA should be shot for doing that to us. Do a search on the RAM site for that emergence start procedure. If you can't find anything send me a PM and I will try to find it for you. Thanks for all the info above and hopefully piece of mind while I travel. It just startled me about some of the folks talking about the DPF being filled after the AEM. My Tech said mine was at 50% and he did a regen/per procedure of the AEM update and got it to 9%. Don't know why that would be part of the AEM procedure. Mike

Hi... I have a 2014 JGC Diesel. I recently had the last recall done and got my extended exhaust warranty. Yesterday I saw the diesel regenerating 80% full. Stopped at store. Came out... it now said 90%. I parked at my cabin home and this morning it was at 100%.

This is the 1st time I had seen any of these messages in 99,000 miles.

So, now am I stuck? I need to drive 2-1/2 hours to get back home. I ordered the odb2 dongle and will download the software, but the dongle wont be at my home until monday...

Can I drive the 2-1/2 hours home without completely destroying my engine?

Thanks! Appreciate any insight.

Both the 80% and the 90% dash message instructed you to continue driving at highway speeds. Why did you disregard this?

Did the 100% message instruct you to see the dealer? I wouldn't drive it 2.5hrs in that condition.

I get to the last step before turning on the particle regeneration and the damn error pops up again and blocks the regeneration. No matter how many times I clear the error codes the second I turn on the engine it pops up again. After running through the process nothing changes and nothing happens.

Do you know what I'm doing wrong?

I have 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with EcoDiesel, this is the second time I have had the problem. Now have 115,000 miles. Car it sitting at the dealer waiting to be fixed but they have not worked on it yet. Do you think with that many miles it will clear up my issue? Also, I had already scheduled my computer upgrade for this Friday, would this type of service been under the new extended warranty they are providing? Thank you so much for your expertise!!

I assume you’re referring this application to the 3.0 liter eng in the Grand Cherokee and Ram trucks. I can do that manually with my Motorhome that has a 8.9 liter Cummins engine. I’ve never needed to as 90% of my driving is highway.

Yes, I purchased the app.

The errors currently displayed are the electronic throttle cable and Filter 100% full see dealer. I clear the codes, start DPF Regeneration Enabling, then start the vehicle and press start for the Particulate filter Regeneration. I have tried twice today with no luck. Not long after the RPM's rise to 2000 the error message switches back to see dealer instead of drive on highway.

I have owned my 2015 JGC all of its 79,872 miles and have had regen pop up at the most inconvenient times. First and only brand new vehicle. Pulling into the driveway with a load of groceries? "Drive at highway speed". Pulling into work 2 minutes late? "Drive at highway speed". Pulling into parking lot of site after driving 300 miles non-stop from NJ to VT? "Drive at highway speed". The dude abides. Saw someone else on here get chastised for not doing it. Come on, these trucks are ridiculous.
Yesterday, during the Covid-19, the old girl decided she was stuffed, went limp and wouldn't regen. This has happened two other times and brought it to the dealer. Mainly to document all of the Diesel related issues for when this thing has a real meltdown. With this nonsense virus I've been quarantine for 5 weeks. Not about to go sit in a dealer or drive some hot seat loaner.
Went to Google and found this exact thread. Downloaded free AlphaOBD first and quickly found paywall. Slept on it and ponied up the dough.
Really have to follow exact steps. Not the greatest app layout but I was able to kick off the standing regen. First time I walked inside after kicking it off and as soon as I got inside it stopped. App needs to be connected.
Started it again with the same sequence, left phone in JGC and proceeded breakfast. it took about 10 minutes for it to go from 100% to 90% then it started to incrementally go down. Saturday about 2500 RPMs the whole time until it was done then it went down to idle.
I'm so glad I got this app and have this issue resolved for now. Going to dig into the AlfaOBD atmore and see what kind of tricks I can do
Thanks for posting

Amazon sells Foxwell NT530 scanner, loaded with Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge for about $160. You can do manual regen with Foxwell NT530.
You can also load, five other car manufacturers specific software on scanner. $60 per manufacturer.
Works great for cheap scanner, allows me to to do all maintenance options on BMW. Such as transfer case reset, after changing fluid. Electronic parking brake reset, after changing rear pads.

Does anyone know if taking your Jeep into the dealer for a manual forced regen results in them updating the ECM? In other words, is it dependent that they update the ECM in order to do the forced regen?

CIL just went on. Coincidentally perhaps, my EVIC gave the reading "Exhaust Filter Nearing Full Safely Drive at Highway Speeds to Remedy". I drove almost 2 hrs for about 210km (130 miles) on cruise control at 124kmh (77mph). But this message refused to clear. I eventually gave up and headed home. After reading through some of these threads, I have a sneaking that I might get an exhaust filter full and go into limp mode (haven't had this happen before).

Because I'm in Canada, I haven't got the AEM update done (no point as there's no reimbursement) and I still have my GDE tune in place. My worry is if I take this into the dealer for a forced regen, they will update the software. Does anyone know if an update is mandatory for them to run a forced regen? If so, then I'll probably consider purchasing this AlfaOBD app and trying to run it myself.

I brought mine in for forced regen early April. They put a note on my receipt about the AEM update and the way it read I thought they had done it so I called. They responded that they wouldn’t do it without my permission. They called it version 2 of the program. They told me that they have had no complaints about this update. They were honest with me about the complaints on the original version. With that and some of the comments I read on this forum I decided to get the update done.
I am very pleased. I haven’t seen a ‘keep driving‘ notice since and it hasn’t affected the performance. I just got on the highway this week for a couple hundred miles and it seems that my mpg has dropped by 1 or 2 mpg which doesn’t bother me in the least. 27 & 28 mpg is still good driving 75 mph.
I am still waiting for my check.

Dang! It worked!! Saw a few others on this thread that were not having luck, same as me after about 5 attempts. Super frustrated, wife getting upset that I bough a android device and $50 app, so I had to have a couple adult beverages to ease my mind. After buying a craigslist $100 used Samsung S7 for the app and reading the successful post #47 and went and tried again.

As stated in previous post...Just copied and capitalized on a few words in step #4. This is just what I did. Probably work without all the app closing, just telling my story.

1. With the ignition on (vehicle not running) clear fault codes using AlfaOBD app.
-The EVIC should now display something similar to Continue driving atHighway Speeds to Remedy Issue

2.Close app, turn off vehicle. With the ignition on (vehicle not running), run AlfaOBD app, select "DPF Regeneration Enabling" and select START

3.Close app, turn off vehicle. Back on with the ignition on (vehicle not running), run In AlfaOBD app, select "Particulate filter Regeneration"

4. Start vehicle and immediately select START "Particulate filter Regeneration". Key is to IMMEDIATELY SELECT START!! That was my whole issue, I was waiting a few seconds after vehicle started to select start.

SCREW THE JEEP DEALERSHIP! They were going to charge me $160 to just tell me what’s wrong with it. Told them it would more than likely be a warranty issue and that I never got a “regen” warning since I got the recall software done and that I just need a Regen force generated, they didn’t care. Jeep is working perfect now after a week of limp mode. Thanks forum!! You guys rock!!!

You can also purchase on Amazon Foxwell NT530 for around $160.
Loaded with Chrysler/Jeep software.
Can also load up to five other, automotive manufacturers software to NT530, for $60 a piece.
Also under new settlement extended warranty. All code reading by dealer free. Even if code, turns out to have nothing to do with extended warranty parts.
