Wife and I are waiting for android auto (if) we buy the grand cherokee.

the savings are 17s are great, though. Also, we could get a nice cpo 17 soon. but android auto is a hard must for her.

Does anyone know if the version 4 can be swapped out with a 2017 head unit, thus adding android auto to the vehicle?

Nobody knows yet since the new HU isn't available yet since no '18 GC have hit the lot. Maybe the Compass HU would work, but it's probably not configured right.

Guys with Hellcats and 392s have successfully swapped the '17 HU into their '16s with a bit of trial and error. I think they finally got everything working. No guarantee we'll have the same luck though. They had to replace the HU, USB panel, and I believe reprogram something.

Now when you say they swapped the '17s into the '16s, is that what you meant to say? or do you mean swapped 18's into 17's? I ask because - as you said above - don't we care about the '18 units here, not '17? Aka aren't 17 and 16 the same, ergo don't matter for swapping?

I ask because I'd gladly pay the money for this. I'd even pay full OEM retail for the unit as long as it worked.

....and...even if you can swap it in, the cost will likely be very, very high to acquire the unit.

I would pay to play for an updated head unit.

I contacted infotainment.com who sells the new radio. They said to wait until next year for a retrofit. I personally think if someone hooked up the new radio and the USB hub it would work (but might have to wait for 2018 MY vehicle parts, but maybe all the FCA vehicles use the same media/radio parts... haven't looked at specific part numbers).

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are game changers. Make the built in Nav useless, and with the streaming music capabilities make SiriusXM useless. I put an aftermarket KENWOOD in my '15 and would put a '18 stock unit back in if it had AA/CP functionality.

Thanks for the link. Sounds like it may be possible? If you look at page 24, someone shows pics with carplay working. You need to replace the headunit and the media hub where your iPhone would plug into. Cost was $1400 I read and that appeared to be after some credit for your unit. At least for the challengers/chargers, they haven't been able to get the heated seats to work with the 2015 models. Hopefully the grand cherokee doesn't have the same issue.

I have a 2016 Chrysler 200 that got into an accident. My replacement was a 2017 charger for 22 days. My uConnect 8.4 v3 vs the chargers v4 was no contest. The nav is so terrible on the uconnect that it isn’t with using. For all of carplays faults the navigation makes up for it

I didn’t use android auto much but it now has waze as an option too and just for that reason the upgrade seems like a no brainer.

The other major difference was the resolution. I could tell it was higher quality than mine. I looked into the 8” alpine unit but it doesn’t have CarPlay and I would rather not use the 7”. So that leaves me with one option. Upgrade

Looking at the connectors on infotainment site it doesn’t look like a simple plug and play process. One would have to get a wiring diagram and solve for the differences.
