'service 4wd' light, again!

After a few months of ownership, I started having the 'service 4wd' light blink on for a few seconds at random times. The dealer flashed the TSB concerning the problem and it went away. A few weeks ago the light started coming on again, concurrently with the 'traction control off' light. Happened only while braking and after many miles of highway speed driving. Dealer diagnosed a problem as the transfer case shift motor. He said Jeep must be having a problem with them because replacements were on national back order (might take a month or more to get one). He said that I can keep driving it without any harm, and it shifts in and out of 4 wheel low just fine.
Anyone else having problems in this area, or other back ordered parts?

Update - dealer replaced the transfer case shift motor and a control module (both were on back order for a time), said it test drove fine. When I started home the same problem happened within two blocks. Took it back and explained to the service dept the problem was not solved. They said they'd look into it. They let me keep the loaner, which I appreciate since technically they don't have to. I kinda felt sorry for them. I am wondering, since the parts they replaced obviously weren't the problem, do they get reimbursed for them?

Thanks for posting this... having the same exact problem with our '13 Hemi Grand Cherokee Overland (2500 miles). Went in last Tuesday and the dealer flashed the computer- the next day the service 4wd light came on 16 separate times during a 22 mile commute to work. Took it back to the dealer yesterday and this time it flashed a code that the transfer case motor was bad. It's on order and should be in next week- hopefully this will fix our problem as well!

Hate to necro-bump but this thread was helpful as I was having the same issue.

Was having the "serv 4wd" message intermittently. Had the dealer do the TSB flash and a couple other things that didn't fix the problem. After a 4th visit they were finally able to pull the code for a bad transfer case motor and replaced it the next morning. I'm on day 2 with no issues. Hope this helps someone else.

Bump for an old thread. Service 4wd light came on in my '11 Overland. Dealer couldn't find any trouble codes so they flashed the computer per the recall. Light came back on the next day. It's going back in this week.

There's also a significant clunk when going from D to N and from R to N, is this related or is something worn out?

Well, I'm having the same issue with my '11 JGC. For the past week the "Serv 4WD" light has been intermittently flashing on for most drive cycles, and sometimes it will come on later in a drive cycle or not come on at all. It coincides with the ESC light illuminating despite me not having the Selec-Terrain in Sport mode, or without me turning the ESC off manually with the dash button.

Noticed the other day, during a good rain, that when I turned around in a parking lot it oversteered, which is odd for the vehicle. When the AWD mode is selected as "Auto" the thing could be pedalled to the floor during a turn and drive as straight and true as my wife's AWD Audi. This may be a sign that the AWD is disabled, which would explain the "ESC off light".

I've tested her offroad at least 3 times and engaged all the Selec-Terrain modes as well as low gear, descent control, and drove her through some relatively deep mud with no problems. My assessment is all 4WD capabilities are still functioning well in both High and Low settings.

My WK2 is an Overland with Selec-Terrain, QDII, and QL. Haven't had one mechanical issue with the vehicle since I bought it almost 2 years ago at 40,000 miles. This issue just arose around 85,000 miles.

So, I took my Jeep to a local indy shop that rates highly among Jeep enthusiasts and just about everyone else that's used them for repairs/modifications for the last 30 years. The service manager called later in the day and mentioned they pulled a DTC from the DTCM that was isolated as being a faulty code generated from the ELSD due to faulty programming from Chrysler. Seems I've read several other people were told the same thing, only to find out that the "flash" repair process isn't the fix for everyone.

Here's the TSB I found online in reference to "flashing" the module: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_2100811.pdf

Unfortunately, the indy shop had their computer out for repair, so they cannot perform the TSB flash until next week. I'm driving the Jeep this week and take it back on Monday the 29th. I'll let you all know if the flash fixes the issues or if it comes back on the day after as many of you have experienced.

Questions: How much has everyone paid their dealership/indy shop for this reflash? Does anyone know if TSB 21-008-11 is covered under any warranties for Jeep or the dealerships?

So, here's my follow up after completion of repairs:

Decided to take the Jeep to the local dealership to get a second opinion, and to hopefully utilize the warranty covering drivetrain/internally lubricated parts. Turns out that the dealership also found the DTC, but said it was stored and not an active code. Of course, their tech took a few days for diagnosis. He found that the "rear axle motor locker actuator" for the ELSD had failed, and was causing the ESC to go into "limp" mode, as well as the ELSD to not lock up properly during some instances. This was the reason for both the "Serv 4wd" light as well as the "ESC Off" light illuminating.

Lucky for me, this repair was covered under Chrysler's warranty due to the part being a component of the "internally lubricated" ELSD (Electronic Limited Slip Differential) which is housed in the rear differential housing and drives the rear independent axles.

I've had the vehicle back for a week now and the lights remain off. I've driven over 1000 miles (one trip back and forth to New Orleans) and around town prior to this weekend's trip. So far, the 4wd is functioning perfectly as well. Lets hope it continues to run like designed, but who knows.

So, in conclusion, it appears that there are several causes of the "Serv 4wd" light illuminating. Fixing it could include a "flash" per the TSB, fixing the loose wiring near the rear housing, replacing the entire control module for the 4wd, or (in my case) replacing an electronic actuator for the ELSD inside the rear housing.

Hope this helps anyone with this issue in the future. If I run in to any driveability issues I'll post it on this forum to let you all know. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. It was very helpful in talking with the service advisor and helped us track down some reasons prior to starting the repair.

Cheers!

Hi there. Thanks for posting...I had this exact same issue happen to me this afternoon and took it to the dealer, which did everything you just mentioned above, but I ended up having to pay for it. I thought it should have been covered under the warranty, but if possible, would you mind sharing any details about the bill pertaining to warranty information, etc., I would really appreciate any help and/or advice that I can take back to them and reverse the charge. Thank you!

Maompson, I'm not sure why the dealer did not cover the repair in your case. However, my first inclination is possibly due to the mileage of your vehicle, or the lack of extended warranty coverage. I had an extended warranty until 76k miles I bought when I purchased the JGC at 40k miles that covered a few small repairs prior to the ELSD issue. As you read though, it was at 85k miles when the ELSD actuator failed. Thankfully, the dealership in Austin I bought the vehicle from had a lifetime/100k warranty on covered drivetrain issues. That's most likely the reason mine was covered and yours was not. Possibly, that dealership is not able to provide that level of warranty to their vehicles, or it may be due to improper coding on the repair. I'd definitely contact the dealership's service manager first, then FCA if he/she does not offer any solution. Feel free to use my post about the repair if they need evidence it was covered before. The dealership I used is named Maxwell Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge in Austin, TX. Just like I've learned as a manager of a medical practice, whether something is covered by a warranty/insurance has almost everything to do with how it's written up/coded before the claim is submitted. Best of luck!

I purchased my 2011 JGC used in 2018. The Jeep had about 55k miles when the service 4x4 light and traction control light came on. I had done my own transmission fluid and filter change about a week before (I don't think this had anything to do with the issue). It was April 2019, the night before I had pulled my 7k lb trailer About 70 miles (I don't know if the heavy towing had anything to do with the issue). For months the light would turn on/off weather depending. I started with changing the transfer case motor (because I'd read about it on here). The motor cost me $277 at autozone. That worked for a day. I drove it with the service 4x4 light on for about 9 months. I came across a YouTube video explaining it could be the transfer case control module, which is located under the driver seat. In my research I found that there were a few different part numbers. The part number on my module had been discontinued. Dealerships wouldn't give me the new part number. I didn't want to order the wrong part because of the no return policy many online parts stores have. Plus I wasn't sure that it would fix my problem. Finally ordered the Transfer case control module ($180) from the dealership. Unhooked the battery installed the new part and have no more light. Very easy to change the module. Probably didn't need to change the motor, but did.

I have experienced something similar to this except my issue also has the Coolant Temp drop to the lowest level. Once I turn the Jeep off and restart it the problem clears itself. I don’t have the ELSD so that wiring issue is out for me, I have a 2011 JGC Limited with the 5.7. I have 143K miles but otherwise the Jeep still purrs like a kitten. I am leaning towards a possible faulty Transfer Case Control module under the driver seat. I will raise the seat and make sure all the wiring connections are still intact first.

The dealer has had my Grand Cherokee 2015 Diesel with the continued alert "service the 4 wheel drive system" and the incon on the instrument panel is for the Electronic Steering.........first the dealer said I had a low battery causing the problem and replaced the battery $175. That did not stop the alerts......now the dealer has had my Jeep for over 5 days with no resolution.
Reading all of these postings, it is clear that Jeep/Chrysler doesn't have a reason or cause readily diagnosed.
How have any one resolved this problem with their dealer?

Thanks ahead
Ken
