I am getting random "service shifter" fault message displayed. No apparent fault or change when driving. Has anybody else experienced this

#2 ·
Not random, but the one time it happened my phone guy had pulled of the shifter head to pop the centre console, when u take the top cover off the head their is a screw under the cover make sure it is screwed down tight, mine wasn't and u could shift from P to R to Drive without pressing the button, screwed the screw down properly and he has been good since.

Thanks for the advice. Checked the shifter as stated but found nothing. dealer also says no logged faults. Did a flash update but fault message displayed five times on way back from dealer! Back to drawing board on this one

Just took my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk in for the cruise control recall and asked them to review the Service Shifter message. Had a TSB from a dealership that this is a known issue. The advisor was like "we won't fix this for free". Am like I have Jeep Corporate Numberss. You will be fixing at no charge.
If this is a known issue with a Technical Service Bulletin then it is a Jeep repair issue.
Keep you posted.

I got that message repeatedly on one leg of my last long trip when I was towing a trailer. That was the only time I've ever had the message. After stopping for gas and restarting the jeep I never got the message again on the trip or since. Everything seemed to work properly despite the message. The EVIC didn't show any stored messages.

I'm getting the "service shifter" notification nonstop the past 2 days. It even dings every 10 seconds. It's still shifting fine. I have the '14 Summit 5.7L as well. I really don't want to have take this to the dealership for something stupid. I saw a YouTube video of a mechanic who had a '17 model and had to replace the panel that covers the shifter because of the little black electronic box adhered to the underside. He said they wear out so had to replace it and the wiring harness.

Just came across this because I got this message about service shifter on my 2017 cherokee and I am also out of warranty, albeit just slightly. I took it to a local dealer and had them check it. I mentioned the TSB and they came back after a few minutes and said that the TSB did not apply. They said mine was in the shifter and the shifter had to be replaced. They wanted almost $800 for that. I said no to that. So my question is, has anyone out there found what the issue is and why the shifter can't be repaired? I am afraid that if nothing changed then paying $800 for a replacement and could get the same problem. Seems like Jeep has had shifter issues for several years now and I think that's long enough to have things worked out. They should replace the shifters on these that they say need to be replaced, regardless of warranty. Seems to me they shipped vehicle with known bad parts or defective somehow.

This is what I just sent to JEEP Customer Care about an Identical Problem: Also call Customer Care: No response from them yet. What was the outcome of your "Service Shifter" problem. Did they fix at their cost or yours?

I have a 2017 Jeep GC Limited with 55K miles that had the "Service Shifter" warning light come on. Vehicle ran fine no issues. Made appt. with local Jeep Dealership and drove the Jeep in yesterday (03/29/22). Ran just fine, I just wanted the light cause diagnosed and fixed. Dealership ran a diagnostic on it and informed me it needed an updated software flash. Conducted the Flash. NOW... the vehicle is inoperable without a complete Electronic Shift Module (ESM) replacement. They could not even reverse what they did so I could drive home. What they did was IRREVERSIBLE and I would have to leave the car there until they could find a NEW ESM and install it for $900! I had to take a Uber home and have no vehicle. This is not right for a vehicle with only 55K miles that was running just fine into the Jeep dealership. Please help!

We have a 2016 Cherokee KL Trailhawk. We have been getting the service shifter error message on the dash since the beginning. All of the shifter lights go on so we can't see what gear we are in. If I pull over and stop and restart the engine it goes away. We were getting them a couple of times a month in the beginning. Then just once every month or two. Now we just had it three times in about 2 weeks.

We have made several calls to customer care. At first they assigned us a case and got involved in two fixes. It was not fixed either time. I have called since and gotten some run around. One told me that it was computer, and that a recent update would take care of it.

We just had it in to a different dealer for something else and I asked about it. He found two error codes TCM U1465-00 Implausible Driver ShiftRequest Signal Received and ESM P1C86-1D PRNDL Display-CircuitCurrent Out of Range. He said he found a Technical Service Bulletin that came out in September 2018 that is right on point. It says we will need a new shift harness repair kit (includes wire harness and bezel). Said be sure and get the right color. He wouldn't give me the TSB number or a copy of it. Said any dealer can access it in their system.

We are traveling and it takes a week or two to get an appointment, so we are going to get it done down the road.

We are still under warranty, and expect that it will be covered.

Hope this helps everyone.

It really isn't clear what vehicle type OP has, and in the intervening 3.5 years since his message was posted I imagine his issue has reached a resolution of one type or another.

I have a 2014 WK2 with the ill-conceived Shifter of Doom that killed Star Trek guy. When I have encountered this "Service Shifter" error message (and several other dire sounding errors) it has been transient and attributable to ODB2 dongles and adapter software. Unplug the adapter/reboot the vehicle and it goes away. Definitely freaked me out the first time I saw it though.

The "service shifter" message appeared on the screen of my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited two days ago and has not reappeared since. After reading everyone's comments, I will probably let it go for now and wait to see if it comes back. My husband recently updated the uconnect software with a usb chip were received in the mail so I can't imagine that is affecting the vehicles shifter, but you never know.

i literally just had this happen to me this morning 1/26/20.
i used auto start to start my 2014 jeep then got in once i was about ready to go it flash "service shifter" i freaked and turned the engine off and back on and it didn't come back on... so idk is that something of a recall to check for? im curious too because i have no more warranty :/

#19 ·
I have a warranty and have not received any notice of this issue. Like you, when this message popped up on my dash screen I immediately turned off the engine then restarted it and have not experienced it since. Next time you have your jeep serviced for anything you might ask if they have any experience with this issue. However, I read others who spent $100's of $ to replace parts have experienced it again. So my attitude is, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I still love my jeep. :)

I was getting the message occasionally a couple years ago. About a year ago I towed a trailer on vacation and started getting the message a lot while towing. After that trip I have never gotten the message again. I'm guessing there are many ways the computer can "Read sensors" and conclude the shifter needs help and that some of those ways are programming errors, not real problems. My shifter always worked even when the message was up.

Others have noted strange electrical issues when their magnetic wheel speed sensors get covered in metal filings. Have to take the wheels off to access these and clean them. Not sure if symptoms are the same but the fact that you just had brake work done near these sensors is worth looking.

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit and I also get the service shifter notification on the cluster, I took mine to the dealer. They told me I needed to replace the shifter so I did. 2 weeks later the message is back on. Has anyone figured out a solution to this issue?

Started to have the same problem here a month after the warranty ran out on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk took it in today they hooked it up got the reading U1465-00 or P1C86-1D stored also a TSB 08-054-18 REV A display in witech then told me that I needed a shifter bezzel and harness $628 plus taxes.. I replied no thanks I can replace it myself and left...This seems to be a big problem on most years and there should be a recall for this problem,Just Saying.Has anyone else done there own.

I had this happen on my 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk with almost 91k miles. The first time was the middle of last week, on the way to work during a left turn from a stopped intersection. I was 100 yards from work and just parked and went in, no issues or messages on the way home. It just came up yesterday when I was in a hurry, while taking a left turn from stopped, at the same intersection. The dealer recommended the same replacements but I am declining and going to just deal with it like everyone else.

Edit: Dealer told me all parts they service are covered under a 2 year warranty. I might so it because of this, but I'm not sure since it seems to just come back for most people.

"Service shifter" warning light started coming on on the driver display this summer, accompanied with a warning chime. At first intermittently, now it is on pretty much full time after moving into gear. I am unable to use 4WD, see electronic speedometer, gas consumption gauges or other information on vehicle due to the error message. Took to Wyler Eastgate Jeep on 7/16, they informed me the bezel on the shifter needed replacement, and the part would be in the following week. I had them keep the car for the following week. The following week they notified me it was possible the part wouldn't be available until the end of the July, but that the vehicle was still under warranty so it wouldn't cost me anything. I have since followed up in August and again last week as the dealer never called back on the status. The latest call was on 9/29 (almost 3 months since first appointment), and the parts department contact told me that of the two parts needed for the repair, one was placed on "increased backorder status" from Jeep, meaning that the dealerships were "blocked" from ordering it or it even being sent out to the dealership. They are now unaware of when the part might become available again.
From this experience and the comments, it sounds as though the part is faulty, hence it won't be used on a repair. Sounds like there should be a recall issued if the part is faulty and the number of complaints is so widespread, and Jeep hasn't addressed it to consumers or dealers. My 2017 Cherokee has 28,000 miles. Contact: Check for Recalls: Vehicle, Car Seat, Tire, Equipment to file yours so we can get this thing recalled.

Hi, My grand Cherokee just did this to me today after replacing my brake pads and rotors. the light on the shifter started to cycle crazy. and not it has a check engine light on. Were you ever able to resolve this issue with your jeep?

I'm glad to see some others are having this issue, but upset at the same time because it's clearly an issue a lot of us are experiencing with NO help from our local dealerships.

My saga: The wife's 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited displays the service shifter and the check engine light comes on with cod U1467. I run a mobile bartending service (Tap Truck Charleston) and forgot a permit so had her drive it to me at the event. When she got there, she wasn't able to put the car into park in the middle of a busy parking lot. Even with the door open, it wouldn't go into park which was supposed to be addressed by safety recall s27/NHTSA 16V-240. Then, it wouldn't go into drive... several occurrences of this later, we took it into our local jeep service department and they promptly diagnosed as a short in the shifter. I asked about the recall and they said that the issues aren't related and that the part wouldn't come in until January 6th, 2021. They had the vehicle since before Christmas. Dissatisfied, I called FCA. I explained everything and she says, "normally we could help you out but we see here you have 0 loyalty points." Now wait a second - I also happen to own a 2014 Ram 1500 which I bought from the same dealership... But, okay... great customer service. I ask to speak to a manager and was told one was unavailable and they would have to call me back. Guess who never called back? I call back the service department and ask for the service manager. Go through the same circus show with him and he offers $100 off so now my price is down to $750 for the shifter to be replaced. Fast forward to January 4th. I call and confirm the part is on it's way and the service adviser said yes and it will be done no later than today, January 7th. Today comes and I get a call saying the part is now not going to be in until the 22nd and the tech doesn't recommend driving the car but that he knows we need it for my wife to get to work and we can come pick it up if we want... I called FCA a second time today and they said they will open a case and I will be receiving a call within 24 hours....

This is all so ridiculous and yet another issue with a Jeep shifter that seems to be more of a repair money maker for the company than anything else. I also filed a complain with the NTSB and was told I could file a complaint and an investigator would reach out if necessary but there was nothing further that she could do for me but to advise me to call my state attorney general's office.

At this point, I'm strongly considering getting the part and just doing it myself. My question is - does replacing the shifter require it to be flashed?

Cheers,
Zach

Zach this sounds like my exact experience over months. They also replaced my radio control frequency module which had promptly died. Truck is now skipping gears and intermittently not starting/ stopping or not recognizing the fob. I also have a 16 Cherokee but I'm thinking I need to walk away from both and Chrysler altogether. My 14 gc is the best suv I've ever had but it's so unreliable re electronics I don't think I can keep it. Is this a one off lemon or is this a common jeep complaint. Seems like they've over built the electronics workout sufficient quality support?

I'm having the same problem on my 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk. I have 56000 miles. Mine has only done it 3 times, and all 3 times was when it was shifted from drive to reverse.

Has anyone gotten it repaired and it never returned? It sounds like some people have had $800 dollars worth of parts replaced only to have it come back.

I have a 14’ summit eco diesel with 150,000km. I’ve had the periodic Service Shifter message come over over the past year, usually only during heavy rainfall on the highways but it’s always gone away until recently with no rainfall present.

I now have the service shifter notification bong every couple of seconds, my RPMs flutter. Than after 10mins the whole dash lights up with the infamous Chrysler Christmas tree for awhile and the Speedo goes out while driving. I have every notification flash and display on the dash as well as the window wipers start going full tilt, the transmission gets locked into 6th gear with a check engine light and the dash message flashes no com bus communication. A OBDII scan shows 14 codes all relating to communication errors.

I figured out that if I press in the E Brake and release it, everything stops and is normal for a good few minutes. I found this when I pulled over and heard clicking under the back of the vehicle, figured I better apply the E Brake just incase while it’s running to hear the clicking since I’m looking under the vehicle from the side. This hack got me home the other day however the vehicle is now parked in my driveway not being driven. I have no faith in dealers on electrical issues as no one has been able to provide a diagnose on the periodic service shifter message.

Anyone else out there experience anything similar or has anyone found a fix for the service shifter issue on a 14’ GC. I feel this is the root cause of my problem as it’s all that flashes for the first 10 minutes till the Christmas tree gets plugged in.
