My Jeep is a 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland with a 5.7L HEMI and 182,000 miles.
It needs a new thermostat. I've noticed there are options in thermostat rated temperatures for my engine ranging from 160°F - 205°F. The OEM rating is 203°F. Supposedly the only reason to go with thermostats rated for 190°F and higher is for the most efficient operation of emission/smog control related components. Can anyone else verify this? Are there any real world reasons not to choose a thermostat rated for 160°F - 185°F? In my mind I feel like a lower temperature thermostat would be fine and possibly good for overall engine performance and longevity. Am I wrong, why or why not?
