Hi everyone,
I have a 2011 WK2 that had this problem ... in the technical service they suggested me to buy the transfer case motor, since they did not detect anything with the scanner. I preferred to buy the module (ebay with VIN) it took 11 days to get to my house (Santiago, Chile) I changed it myself and problem solved !!!! no more clicks or strange sounds .. and the "low" works perfectly!!!
original module: P56029423AG
new module: P68395643AA
Thanks a lot!!!

Bouncing this thread again to give another data point.

2014 WK2 Summit. 105k miles and have had it over a year.

Started getting the 'Service 4Wd light' and had it slip into neutral and shift roughly between 2 and 3. Would not go into 4WD at all. Took it to the dealer, they looked at it and said TC had burnt fluid and lots of metal "seems like something let go." They replace the TC, say it won't go into 4 Low and needs the controller. After that and $2900 it's driving beautifully so far.

Concerned that maybe all it needed was the controller - but - the previous owner used to flat tow it behind a motorhome (still has the brackets) and I wouldn't be surprised if the TC might have had some wear as a result. So it's crapshoot I guess.

Everything else is in fantastic shape and even did the Radio swap to get Carplay/AA.

Appreciate this thread and the forum.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I have a 2014 grand cherokee diesel which has been diagnosed with a faulty transfer case control module.

However, the Auto electrical place did not want to get involved with replacing it, saying I need to take it to a dealer who can supply and program a new unit. In the meantime, they disconnected the module so the Jeep is perfectly driveable (no more jerking and binding) but until the module is replaced I can't select 4wd.

I'm loathe to take it back to the dealer given they were hopeless, saying I need a new transfer case so I tried a couple other 4wd specialists here in Perth and no one wants to touch it, telling me the same thing - take it to a dealer. These advices contradict what others here have said, ie it is not plug and play.

So can anyone confirm whether or not the transfer control module can be replaced by simply plug and play?

How did you go Chooke? I'm from Aus as well and thinking about replacing the TCM as well. Sounds like the Auto electrician didn't know enough to fix the issue. I've been getting help from these guys www.ausjeepoffroad.com and based on this forum and that one, the TCM is just plug and play and easy enough to fix yourself. No programming required. Here's a video on it as well (US Version - so swap sides for the Aussie mode).
Found this and they say don't program it, and there's an installation guide ( see videos below too)

The one below this one also refers to not needed to program it @6:45 mins in.
Here's another one that fixes another problem with the same part - no programming

Just to add more data since mine is newer than every grand Cherokee I’ve seen in these threads. 2017 grand Cherokee 65K miles with quadratrac II- service esc light came on and stayed on constantly and 4wd light would come on at speeds over 65. Clicking only happened once in a parking lot the day the lights came on. Wouldn’t go into 4 low or sport mode. Could definitely feel weird shifting occasionally and could feel 4wd binding when turning. All the same symptoms many described here. Ordered the appropriate TCCM from Amazon (non oem Chinese seller but appeared to be identical to the one I removed) plugged it in and fixed all the issues so far.

I'm afraid I'll have to join the group.....At the dealer now to check the 4wd light and in there shop they got it stuck in 4wd. They are saying that the codes are for clutch failure (maybe 1 and 2) in the transfer case and want 3K to replace the case. I had the wheel binding while turning, but no clicking. Other than that it was driving fine.
2018 Grand, Overland, 5.7 160k miles. I'm not completely shocked, it's been a good Jeep, but wondering if I should try the control module just in case.
Thinking of asking them to drain the fluid to check the condition. Open to suggestions.

Hey Nolan, Did the new module fix your issue? I went through the same sequence and got stuck in 4Low + Transfer Case neutral, although I was backed into the driveway. My issue was not exactly the same from the start, I just started getting a random SERV 4wd message while driving and ACC, FCW, Trac. Ctrl were all disabled. The first & second time the message cleared by the next time I hopped in but this time the message stayed on and I started pushing buttons to make sure everything was working or wasn't. Now, I am stuck in 4LOW & TC Neutral red light is solid. When I roll forward and back to test I can't tell if it's actually in TC Neutral (RWD) or 4LOW. It is high RPMs & slow-moving. Pretty clearly not in 4HI. Based on this thread I am thinking I should just order the module and snap it in myself to start.
hello, thank you for sharing your problem. i got the same problem with my gran cherokee 2012 5.7 my principal issue is the TC neutral light is stuck on red and the truck stay inneutral even if i put on parking or revers or drive. do you already solve the issue changing the transfer case module? thank you for your help

I found this Topic in this forum and it saved me $5,046! 2017 GC LTD> I began getting "Service Electronic Stability Control" and traction light warnings. Transfer case causing the wheels to lock and hop while backing up. Sticky lurches when moving/shifting from a standstill. But, this was intermittent and on some ignition cycles there were no warnings and no symptoms. Sometimes the warnings would clear themselves while driving. I was not able to pull codes with a standard OBD scanner.

Leading me to the Dealership. I arrived late, so left the Grand Cherokee over night and they called me the next morning with the Diagnosis and "Not very good news my man". "You need a New Drive Control Module and a new Transfer Case. "Your Transfer case is damaged internally causing your wheels to lock. It's required to replace the module with the transfer case replacement". We need to order the parts... about 7 days and 3 days for the repair.....Plus we recommend a fuel system flush.... $5,045.66 total."

I asked, "If it is mechanically damaged, how come it's intermittent and fixes itself on different ignition cycles?" He said his mechanic was certified and he trusts what he's being told. My BS alarm went off.

I decided to bring the Jeep home and do more research. The two posts previous to this one convinced me. I ordered the Transfer Case Control Module on Amazon $127.99 XtremeAmazing Transfer Case Control Module for Grand Cherokee Durango 2017 2018

Like posted by VSBEATON and Phi11y2 above, it took 3minutes to get under the driver seat panel and swap it out. All warnings and Symptoms GONE! No Programming required. I'm so happy and glad others before me have shared their experiences (FirehawkNS). Bless this forum!

PS: I did a bit of forensics on the old OEM module and found the connector pins are molded into the black case, but not soldered to the PCB! They are wedge/spring fit into PCB through holes. This is bound to wear and become intermittent over time and temperature. Not best practice design.

I paid $200 for a dealer to diagnose this issue. They wanted $5,046 to return my vehicle "repaired". With the problem being intermittent (perfectly good some ignition cycles and multiple warnings and issues during other ignition cycles), The issue was obviously intermittent electronics and not a broken mechanical issue.

Dealer said it was an internally damaged Transfer Case that must be replaced, along with the "required" Transfer Case Control Module with a transfer case replacement. Again, if it was mechanically damaged, why would it repair itself during different ignition cycles?

I threw the red flag and brought my Grand Cherokee home, I found the TCCM module on line and recieved it the next day. I replaced the TCCM (3 minutes, under the drivers seat) and my Jeep now runs perfectly! Their is nothing wrong with my Transfer case! (drained fluids using a magnet, with 0.00 fragments indicating wear or damage.

These dealers are ripping off Jeep (Stelantis) for warranty Transfer cases when it is not necessary. I am proof!

Do not let the dealer convince you to replace the transfer case, when it is only the TCCM causing the issue!

Makes me very happy my post could help you come to an answer that saved you money. Interesting about how they choose to do the module, I didn't pay attention to it. I am still rolling good with my transfer case after 4 years. DId the regular fluid change Friday and the fluid looked really good considering I was a bit late getting everything changed.

My biggest issue with this Jeep is I have gone to three different dealers around here, even driving up to 70 miles to find another one and all the dealer service department guys seem to be assholes to deal with. I have the service air bag crap on and off I am trying to figure out. Nothing I have will scan the code of course, I loath the thought of taking this thing in just for a scan.

Yep, they will want $200 to read the codes for a diagnosis. They will pick the most expensive repair method and give you an inflated quote. Probably also add in and upsell you on a fuel system clean! They wrote my diagnosis like this: "C1403 code: Transfer Case Internally Damaged". THAT'S BS! The code indicates an electronic error, not mechanical! I'm taking my issue up the chain of command at the dealer to see if I can get my $200 back for a misdiagnosis. Hope you find a solution for your airbag issue before going to them, but Airbags can be tricky and dangerous so you might be over a barrel this time. Thanks again and good luck.

Friday when I got in the Jeep (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7l), I noticed a quick round of clicking coming from the vehicle at first I didn't notice any other things until a little more driving. I have narrowed it down to the Transfer Case, but not sure which part to focus on first. Just checking to see if anyone here has dealt with this before I go in a bit blind or give in to the dealer.

Through testing I observed the following.

Clicks
~ Clicks coming from Transfer Case (sounds like from the Transfer Case motor on Pass side)
~ It happens When ignition is put to run (not cranked) 13-16 Clicks once and not again but always the same 13-16 clicks together quickly through all observations.
~ It happens When Vehicle is started.
~ It happens When putting into drive or reverse
~ It happens When turning the wheels
~ It happens When braking I think
~ It Doesn't happen any other time.

Mostly drives normal'ish. When reversing and turning the wheel sharp it feels like the 4wd system is dragging. Lots of resistance. I believe it feels a little resistance going forward as well and turning sharp.

No 4wd service light or inop light. No indication of issues on dash. No issues accelerating or driving at speed. 4wd looks to shift through modes fine.

Through research a lot of people have had the FDCM (final drive control module or Transfer Case Control Module) replaced at the dealer for this. I have yet to see a post pointing to this issue in a 2014 or newer WK2, mostly 2012 and older. Also mentioned in a couple of post is the dealer has to program the control unit. Not sure what they are programming it for though and only saw that a couple of times for older jeeps.

Some people said they replaced just the Control unit, some just the motor, some both, some the entire transfer case. Seems you have to have a special scanner to see any codes for the 4wd system, but since I don't have any lights, I assume I don't have any codes possible. My scanner doesn't show any issues.

The control unit is $250 on rock auto, the motor is $350. Dealer looks to charge around $800 for control unit with labor some have reported, the motor looks to run $1000 with labor. I already have the control unit out to get the PN from it.

My biggest concern right now is finding the info on programming and I don't know enough on transfer cases to know if I need to drain it to pull the motor. I would assume so, but can't find anything online. Seems most people just go to the dealer to work on these. :/

Any thoughts?

Also, can you disable 4wd and put the front transfer case in neutral on these at all? Don't really want to drive it like this, but don't have much of a choice while waiting on parts.
Thank you sir for this post, ypu saved me a lot of time, frustration and my boss money. I appreciate you but sorry you had to experience such problem.

Yea man, I get so much help reading through this forum, I am just happy I could be a part of the solution for so many others on this issue.

I just crossed over 132k and the issue has not come back or been a problem. Now if I could figure out what in my SRS system is setting off the airbag light randomly without having to go to the dealer to have a code pulled for $100+ dollars that would be awesome. lol

After having my Dealer tell me I needed a new transfer case for $5000 (because that is what their instructions say to do), I took my '17 GC home and replaced the TCCM. I fixed the issue for $127. I contacted Stellantis customer service and alerted them to the issue. In speaking with my dealer service manager, he agreed that it was a wrong diagnosis and also agreed to return my $199.99 diagnostic fee. But it's been 1 month and no refund yet. I'm losing my trust in what these dealers say.

2015 GC Overland, 5.7L. Changed front drivers side wheel bearing. Not long after wife noticed rubbing sounds coming from front end when turning in and out of parking spots. Normal when driving straight. Service 4wd system message appears randomly along with ESC malfunction indicator on dash. Goes away after a few miles. Took jeep to parking lot and did figure 8's. Front end acts like its binding. Like a rear wheel drive truck placed in 4wd on dry pavement. Pulled F77 fuse (front axle disconnect) problem goes away. Took to jeep dealership today. Convinced I damaged something when changing wheel bearing, wheel speed sensor? Was told tcase needs replaced, $5000. Said it was put on rack and guys can tell tcase bad. I'm not convinced. Possible TCCM?
