Hi all,
I have a 14 JGC Ecodiesel. Right at 110,000 miles. I tow a small travel trailer with my Jeep.
Driving the highway Jeep flashed Engine Oil hot message and then empty tank message. The reservoir was empty. After visiting a handful of local shops, one guy did a pressure test and said the water pump needs replacement.
I'm in a small city and the local shops can't take me in for another month. The shop that'll do it is 60 miles way. I've been carrying water bottles with me. Once a day I have to put in a gallon of water after driving 15 miles.
The garage that can do it said they'd charge 3.5 hours labor at $170 per hour since I'm providing my own parts. Labor is $135 if they provide parts. That comes to $637. Does that sound reasonable? Parts are about $250.
I'm getting MOPAR coolant part no. 68163849AB from Amazon. It's 10 year, 150 miles 50/50 concentrate/water. I'm pretty sure that's the correct one. I know some prefer Zerex. Thoughts between MOPAR and Zerex 50/50?
Reading over previous posts, I've gathered I should consider replacing the thermostat, serpentine belt, and radiator hoses. I've also read if hoses are still soft then don't need to replace. To minimize shop labor costs, I think I will do the thermostat replacement myself later on. Shop said hoses and thermostat both look fine. I'm leaning towards replacing anyway.
The shop 60 miles away is charging me one hour labor at $170 to replace upper and lower radiator hoses. I asked them why since the hoses are going to be removed to replace the water pump. The mechanic said he won't need to remove one of the hoses (not sure which one). He also said it will take him time to put them back on and that's why there's a charge if I want to replace them.
I may need to get the job done at this shop since I don't want to drive with a bad water pump any longer than I need to. I'd much rather prefer to repair at a big city 250 miles away.
Beyond hoses and belt, should I get the belt tensioner and idler pulley replaced now also? In a previous post I read the belt will last longer than the tensioner and pulley. Again, I'm at 110,000 miles and I pull a small trailer along with local driving.
Mechanic quoted 1.2 hours labor, $205 total, for belt, tensioner, and idler. With radiator hoses, that's $375.
Thanks.
