Both me and my wife had a 2014 JGC Limited. She still has hers and on Friday I just replaced my 2014 with a 2016 JCG Limited 75th.

I loved the 2014 shifter. I also like the 2016, but miss the quick sport mode capability. I wish the button for the sport mode was all the way to the left and not in the middle.

In any case, I do believe there is a defect besides the confusion factor. I will admit, there were several times I got confused when trying to get into reverse. I never got confused going into Park.

In the 37 months I had the 2014, there are about 5 times that my JGC wouldn't go into Park when I tried to put it there. I would shift into Park from Drive and the vehicle would be in Neutral. I would try several times to move the shifter in Park and it wouldn't go, while I kept pressing harder on my brake. Finally the only way to get it into Park was to release the brake, and then re-apply the brake and try shifting it back into Park. That solved it each time. My wife has never had the issue on her JGC, it just happened with me. My wife was with me twice when it happened to me so she witnessed it as well.

I never brought the vehicle into the dealer because it was so rare - I figured there was no chance they could diagnose it. I was just very careful and warned my wife to be careful. When I saw the recall first came out I was glad to see that there truly was a problem. However as all the following discussions have taken place about the recall, the root cause seems to be people and confusion. Well if I hadn't had this issue, I would have agreed. However, while there are certainly people confused, I don't believe that's the root cause.

I don't know if there is a defect in the shifter or another piece like letting the shifter know it's okay to shift because the brake is depressed (forgive me, I don't know what that part is called) - but based on my experience, there is a defect somewhere along the line that is intermittent (albeit extremely intermittent - 5 times in 37 months with many, many shifts to Park).

I'd bet a lot of money that Anton believed he put the shifter into Park. I can't believe anyone would shift out of Drive and into Neutral to get out of a vehicle. Could it have been confusion? Could it have been this defect? We'll never know. At least the fix should resolve it whether it's confusion or defect.

I saw STAR TREK: BEYOND yesterday. At the end of the last scene, before the credits rolled, were two silent tributes:

In Loving Memory of Leonard Nimoy

For Anton

R.I.P., Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. Very good movie, by the way.

whoa, gonna cost FCA some coin but it will drag for years...here's a choice quote: "I think the Yelchin family is their biggest nightmare because they're not motivated by money," Dordick said. “They can't be bought off. They want them punished and they want a change in the way they do business and we intend to go after them.”

blurb I saw on the news pointed out that he had gotten a recall notice in the mail months before the event.. and, unfortunately, second notice a week after he died.

So I guess we'll plumb the murky depths of the law as to whether recall notices are worth anything at all :(

very easy for the press to have confused it...many got a first notice saying theres a shifter confusion issue but no fix yet and then the second one saying go get it s/w ready especially if a few months ago for first notice....we shall see
