I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee Laredo-X 3.6L with 123,000 miles. I have my dashboard out. Debating on replacing my heater core and evaporator core, but with aftermarket versions since I can’t afford the $550 bucks for OEM.

Are the aftermarket versions any good or should I run away from them?

Brands I can pick from:
  • Four Seasons (mixed reviews, hit and miss)
  • GPD (dirt cheap)
  • UAC (dirt cheap)
  • TYC (low quality reputation)
  • NAPA (don’t know anything about them, but most expensive aftermarket option)

Napa would cost me about $275 total.
The other aftermarket brands would be about $120 total. I read some reviews that the aftermarket versions don’t fit right, plus quality control issues. OEM would be about $550. That’s insane.

The originals that’s came on my Jeep (OEM) are fine, but I have my dashboard coming out anyways so I am debating on changing them with aftermarket versions or leaving the old originals in.

Are the heater cores and/or evaporator cores known to fail on these WK2’s? I have 123,000 miles on my Jeep. The heater core failed on my last two GCs by 130K miles; a 1998 and 2002.

On a side note - I’m also debating on changing my oil cooler filter housing since I’ve read they fail on these 3.6L units. Looking into Mishimoto for that since it comes with the sensors and is generally regarded as high quality brand. This would cost me $275 just for the kit.

Is your Evaporator and Heater Core Bad? If this vehicle had a rep for the heater core of evaporator failing I would say replace them while the dash is out, but it doesn't. So why would you replace a good OEM Heater Core and Evaporator with a cheap aftermarket one?

This vehicle has a rep for the air blend doors jamming and breaking. And I see you have post on exactly that, so while your dash is out, I would replace that unit with a new one for $325, instead of a heater core and evaporator.

Certainly inspect them and if you have cooling system issues that may have caused corrosion, then I might consider replacing them.
