Need to get a key fob programmed. I can’t believe the hurdles you have to jump through to save a buck!
The locksmith is telling me I need a PIN code now. Anyone have a contact as to where I can get this PIN code for my ‘17 GC??
Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming since you're posting in the WK2 Forum and your locksmith is telling you need a pin code, this "key fob" is a RFID chipped security ignition key.

Older models had key fobs just to remotely lock/unlock doors that you could program yourself and a locksmith would not be telling you need a pin to do it.

The RFID chipped keys, your really programming the cars electronic modules to register its unique identifier as being a valid key to allow it to start and run the car. While its at it, it will flip a bit in the key that shows its in use with a vehicle and thus can never be re-used again for another vehicle.

The pin is something Chrysler came up with for the programming process that they dropped. You were suppose to get a pin or could ask for the pin for your car to enable the tools for programming. They intended for the dealer to do all that. When I purchased my XK, it was only a year old and I called Chrysler customer service asking for my pin, like the O.M. said to do, and they had no idea what I was talking about, and told me they couldn't do anything just take my car to the dealer.

Now they're FCA and the key programming tools and processes have been changed a tenth time. The customer self-programmed features have been dropped for a lot of models, because Dealer's couldn't be trusted to prevent employees from using the feature to make spare keys to sell to thieves. So they rewarded the Dealers and punished the Customers for the Dealerships incompetence, and you have to go to the dealer and pay through the nose just to have keys programmed.

I "think" meaning I'm not really sure, the Pin is a relic from when they first started the RFID chipped keys, they don't use it anymore, or if they do, it's the same pin for all cars. Likely a locksmith, if he has the tool to program the car to a new key, its a leased tool that works off paying for the license by paying a hefty fee for it to be enabled to work just one time and probably using the old procedure that need the pin.

I'd call a Dealership or FCA Customer Service and have your VIN# ready. I suspect they won't know what your talking about, but maybe you'll get lucky, maybe if they ask a mechanic that has actually programmed keys to cars, he might know.

I hate to say it, but xJoshxx is probably right. They did good for themselves setting up the system, kept everyone in the dark, and pretty much convinced a lot of dumb customers if they want a replacement key the only thing they can do is go to the dealer and pay hundreds of dollars for a replacement key. So no one knows the alternatives and have no idea what you're talking about when you ask about a Pin for the locksmith with the tool to program the car to the key.

Thanks. yes I called the dealer. They knew exactly what I was talking about.....they want to charge $50 for the code for me to get it for myself.

The locksmith wants $35 for the code Not sure how they get it though.

So locksmith wants $260 with a new remote.....dealer wants $360 or so with a new remote. Thieves

They pay $7 a unit for them from the Supplier. But before you blame the Dealer completely, Corporate is charging them like $300 for the key. It is a scam.

Just so you know, it's just like the proprietary crap with the software, to force customer back into dealerships to overpay for inferior service. All the manufacturers do it, so its not like dumping FCA and going over to Ford or Toyota are you going to find anything different, doesn't make it right, just makes FCA no worse than the rest.

Search ebay, you can find replacement keys for as little $30. Do not buy used keys, once a key is programmed to a vehicle, it can not be reprogrammed, even if they claim it can be reflashed; where are you going to find someone to reflash it?

They are now selling refurbished keys on ebay, for about $75, some folks have gotten ahold of the tool to reflash keys and reset that bit that flips. There are only a couple of people doing this, and I don't see them offering a service to reflash used keys, they likely will tell you just buy a refurbished key from them. And they replace the plastic shells and skins with brand new, so they look just like brand new keys.

Finally, you have to purchase these keys by part number or specific application. DO NOT purchase a key because it looks identical to your key. Keys can look identical but be different internally and only work with certain models or years, and won't work with another model, even though they appear identical to the key for that model.

Also, the keyless enter and go feature (where you leave the key in your pocket and can press the start key, and never have to take the key out of the pocket), its very easy to buy an identical key to your's for you model and year, but it not have that feature. If you get one of those, your going to have to remove the push button and and stick the key head into the ignition and turn it to start. Look up the part number for the key with right features and match it by part number. Or the seller states it is for you model and year and has the keyless enter and go feature.

Finally, call around to dealers and comparison shop, they are very different because it seems FCA is doing very little to enforce quality at the Dealerships. When I did this with my last Jeep, I found a Dealer that would program several keys for me, all at once for one fee, just for $75 (this was 8 years ago). That Dealer got bought out and has new management, just buying parts is a nightmare, total rip-off joint now, I haven't tried to get service done but I'm not hopeful considering what I've seen so far. I may have to drive to the next town over and get my keys programmed from the Dealership there.

What did you do at your local Battery Plus store? Just get the 4 digit pin, or they actually programmed your vehicle to a new Key Fob?
Im pretty sure the programming process cannot be done with a regular scan tool for the newer Jeeps.
I was also able to acquire the 4 digit code for mine from my dealer finally....it was only 4 digits...no letters
Its changed over the years and makes it very confusing.

First there were transponder keys, worked on totally different rules, and you've got people who don't know any better insisting you do the same thing with the RFID kesy as the Transponder, which you don't.

At one time Chrysler Vehicle Owners key program new keys themselves both Transponder and RFID, as long as you had two valid keys to initiate the self-programming feature described in the O.M. Then Chrysler got rid of it (because they're dealerships were screwing up), yet those that had a vehicle kept insisting to everyone else they could program their own keys, despite people explaining till they blue in the face, that the feature was removed after a certain model year.

Then Chrysler brought it back for their less expensive cars, including bringing back transponder keys, perhaps because of all the complaints.

Scan tool is too generic a term today, there are so many, and most are just a cheap OBDII protocol reader and thats it. But yes, just about all "Scan Tools" can not program the keys. But there are professional electronic tools just for programming keys, that do work and often one tool does not work for all vehicles.
I attempted to program a new FOB last night. I have a Launch x431 PROS Mini scan tool that has the immobilizer programming function. I was able to access the immobilizer, start the programming process, enter the code (numbers only were accepted) and received a message that the FOB was added successfully. Well, the FOB does not work.

I will check with the local locksmith next.
Where did you get the x431 PROS Mini scan tool?
Finally I have had success! I called my service adviser again and asked for the 4 digit key code which he happily provided to me. Using that code and my Launch PROS mini, I was able to program the FOB in less than 5 minutes.

I am curious if there are other scan tools that can perform the immobilizer programming for a decent price. Have any of you had any success?
I have the autoenginuity scan tool, can't even come close to programming keys. How many different makes and models can the x431 PROS Mini scan tool do?

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to share what happened to me recently.
My PIN changed. I had a couple keys that were bought off Amazon, that I got ripped off on, as they were not Keyless Go keys as they were claimed to be - they lacked the transponder chip for keyless go. They would unlock the car, and start it if inserted where the button is, but would not allow pushbutton start, nor unlock the car by touching the handle.
Anyway, I programmed those keys, and used a tool to pull the pin to do so, and the pin was 1643.
I got a new OEM key, opened it to verify it had all the same chips on the board as my original (as the the other two did not, and that's how I realized what they were). It did, so I proceeded to program it.
I entered the same pin, and my scan tool kept telling me it was the wrong pin. I took a photo of it that was saved on my phone, so I know it wasn't the wrong pin. Anyway, it locked me out.
So, I tried the method of leaving the ignition turned on for an hour with the original key and still couldn't program it.
So, a few days later (today) I disconnected the battery for a while, and washed the cars while it was disconnected. When I was done, I hooked the battery back up and tried again. This time I selected "read pin" in the scan tool first, and the pin it came back with this time was 0023. Using that pin, I was able to program the key. How or why it changed is beyond me.
