2014 grand Cherokee limited. It happened about a month ago, was in the interstate about 80mph and it just shifted into neutral, it scared me really bad i had an semi behind me , I'm glad that he saw i put my emergency lights on so he slowed down, car wouldn't start, felt like it was getting no gas. I attempted to restarted about 4 times and nothing , while i was looking for a tow company on the internet , i was like heck i will give it another try ,and it started and i drove away. Took it to the dealership , no check engine light on so there was nothing they could do. So i left a little upset. It happened again today. I was driving on the service road and it pop into neutral again tried to restart a few time without any luck.(same it felt like it wasn't getting gas) Let it sit there for about 2 minutes without messing with it and it started again.no check engine light. Could they be sometime that for some reason gets hot and kills the cars? Like a sensor somewhere? I'm not going back to the dealership because i will get the same answer nothing we can do if CEL is not on.
has anyone have the same issue any help will be appreciated.

Odd there's no CEL trouble code.
Maybe the PCM lost power instantly and/or went into lala land and didn't have enough time to generate a CEL.
Only thing i can think of is a bad ground, power supply issue or flaky connector somewhere.

Which motor do you have (determines which transmission)? Strange no CEL.
Pulling back on the shifter on a 2014 puts it in Sport Mode. Pushing forward does put it in neutral. Seems hard to see how that could happen unless someone was crawling from the front passenger seat to the back.
Might try disconnecting the battery, wait a bit, and then reconnect the battery to see if some sort of reset occurs that may fix this very rare issue.

Hey man, I hate to be the devils advocate here, but you might be getting life hints that your transmission valve body might be going out soon. I started with problems similar to yours and one day as soon as my wife got home from the store ..booom.. truck wouldn’t turn on and when it did, it wouldn’t go into gear, then it would suddenly go into gear then next thing you know, that thing was at the jeep dealer with a bad transmission valve body diagnostic. Just something to think about, and get you ready since that job is pretty pricey if you don’t have warranty. I have a 15 grand Cherokee 3.6 also. Good luck to you man.

Not good! Thankful you are ok! I had the same thing happen two different times so far in my 2019 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk. My husband was driving the first time on the highway 60 mph and it made a noise like when you push the gas peddle and you are in neutral. And it felt like neutral with no response. We were lucky there was a small pullout on our side of the highway in a narrow canyon. We tried starting it after letting it coast to a stop and sat for 10 minutes. Nothing. We had to get towed a long distance to a town. Waited several days and the Jeep dealership there said they could find nothing wrong! The CEL was not on. Good grief. That was in November 2022. It happened again when I was driving 30 mph on a two lane paved rural road and twice it did the same thing during a 2 mile stretch. That was today! I'm hoping Jeep is honest with their customers and admits they have a problem and let people know so this failure does not cause someone harm. It seems to be a waste of time to go to a mechanic at a dealership where we both live because they don't bother to evaluate past whether the CEL is on. Where are the great mechanics that are willing to figure out what's wrong?

I think the OP has a Grand Cherokee, not a Cherokee.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was and how to fix it? My 2014 Jeep GC is doing the exact same thing.

No. Mechanic thinks it's fuel pump. Since they are difficult to change and he feels bad I spent $2100 changing the computer, he attached a gauge for me to watch when it dies again. It seems to happen between 3/4 and 1/2 tank of gas. I sure would love if someone had the answer to this problem or jeep recalled this problem. Mechanic confident not transmission problem. All updates have been done.

Add me to this list. 15 SRT. Driving to work doing 50mph, it all of the sudden switched back from neutral to drive several times real quick, finally staying in neutral. I was still at speed, and was able to pull the shifter back into drive. I used the paddles the rest of the way back to work in case that helped for some reason. It didn’t do it anymore, but now I’m always going to be wondering when it’ll happen again.

It’s never done this before. I just got it back last week from getting a cam/lifters/long tubes and a tune. I don’t need any more issues for a while.

Add me to the list. I just got my car back from a front end accident a few months ago and started noticing it. It mainly happens on a hard brake though my wife reported it happening in a lane switch just today. For us, it gets into neutral, the dash chimes and shows neutral. Only after I've let off the brake and re engage the break can I shift it back into drive and continue. I do have to add that my abs light and traction system light is on right now due to a bad wheel hub that the collision center is supposed to be changing on Monday. I will post back after I get the jeep back and run some hard brake tests. This is a 2014 jeep GC laredo

YES!!!! This has happened to me at least 6 times over the past year with my 2014 3.6 Grand Cherokee. Exact same issue. Driving, at normal speed, shifts into neutral/stalls. Coast to the shoulder and you put it in Park. It locks in park but won't start. All interior accessories stay on, dashboard, fan, radio. If you don't touch anything and let it sit for awhile-until the interior accessories go off--you can start it and drive like nothing happened. I've had it to 2 different Chrysler dealerships and they can't figure out what's wrong with it! I'm so frustrated!

My jeep is still having shift into neutral problems. Sometimes 1 to 3x a week and the next week seems fine. Mechanic still thinks it's a faulty wire someplace, but jeep dealer is NOT very cooperative anymore with contacting me. This problem seems to be a very big deal. This loyal jeep driver probably won't be anymore. Jeep should really be reading these posts and contacting people. I'm exhausted trying to find answers. I've made reports, researched the hell out of the issue, and nothing. It's about time jeep steps in. If anyone knows why this is happening please share with us. One of these days this problem is going to get someone killed.

I just had this happen to me yesterday. I have 92000 miles on my 2015 Grand Cherokee Limited. I was driving, car went into neutral and I could not put it in drive. Had to pull over and the shut the car off. After four tries the car would not start. Engine sounded like a dry cough almost. My engine light came on as well. I called my husband and he came to assist. When he tried to start it, it started right up. I was going to take the interstate home like I usually do on a Friday, but I'm glad I didn't.

It doesn't sound like these are all the same issue as some sound like it is stalling and then shifting into neutral. But what many do seem to have in common is that funky shift lever. I would try just manually shifting it into neutral at speed and then see if you can go back into gear. Do it without lifting your foot when you shift into neutral initially and then lift your foot and then pull it into gear and then try it by lifting your foot first then putting it into neutral and then see if it'll go back into gear while rolling. Do this at different speeds just to see if you can get some funky reaction.

This happened to me yesterday. 2014 GC ..driving to work ..suddenly went to neutral and felt like I ran out of gas (had 1/2 tank). I pulled off the side of the road and was unable to push brake or put back in gear. I shut it off and when I tried to restart it, it made a bubbling sound and I couldn't turn it back off u tilmit cycled through. Tried a couple of times...same thing. Called a tow truck and waited a couple hours . Right before the tow got there i tried it again. Started right up. No codes, no check lights, nothing
Mechanic said he can't figure out the problem

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X...same thing...mine wont drive more than 10 minutes and then into neutral it goes. Just getting close to pay off..I am so screwed...$2800 into repairs of oil cooler then pump and now this..cant even get it for a day without a problem. Now I have to buy a vehicle while attmepting to deal with this one..149k miles is not enough considering all the repairs I have had to do on this.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. This has happened to me several times. Driving on the highway lose power...RPMs shoot up but cannot accelerate, as if in neutral, engine light comes on and traction control light. However, I can pull over shut my engine off, restart it and drive as normal, maybe for 5 min or maybe 2 weeks before it happens again. And ususlly the check engine light is off by the next morning. We drove til it did it again and hooked a code reader up immediately, on the side of the road. It showed a cam shaft scensor code, so we replaced it and the next day same thing but i didn't have a code reader. I'm hoping maybe it's the connector that plugs into the sensor. I will check it again soon on the reader. It's obviously an electrical problem of some sort. Jeep definitely needs to recall this issue, its dangerous.

My 2015 Grand Cherokee 3.0 Ecodiesel just had the same thing happen. We were traveling at 55 mph when the vehicle suddenly went to neutral. We coasted to the shoulder. We were able to get it into park. It then turned off. While accessories worked, we could not restart it. We got it towed to the dealership and they're baffled. They pulled the belt and put a start bar on it and cannot get the engine to crank. The service rep says it is not generating any codes. They think it must be mechanical and needs a new engine. After reading the comments in this forum, I'm not so sure.
I welcome any suggestions.
