or another thing is the starter ... yes sounds weird but the starter does trigger that code

 

it has a deep stick. and i get the tranny fluid check when they do the engine oil change. but yeah, after some google search i found out this is a pretty common problem with the TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP message. it's a sign that you soon need to change your starter. weird, i know.

I am currently getting the Transmission Over Temp message but I just had a trans service done and I replaced the starter last year (for the 3rd time). The trans levels are find. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else to check?

I had the same issue with the trans over temp and fan coming on, had a transmission shop check the temperature and it was spiking up and down all over the place; however, when they checked the trans dip stick it was ice cold. They told me it was possibly a faulty sensor within a solenoid pack inside the trans.

Nonetheless, I didn't end up getting it fixed and eventually it ended up evolving into incorrect gear ratio codes and was told I needed a new transmission due to the fact my jeep would push into second gear. But thats just my jeep, who know yours might be a different situation.

Maybe you just have a faulty sensor, or something much worse? I would get it checked out immediately, could save you some money in the end.

Stage 3 trans on the way!!!! Ill keep you guys updated, this new trans should fix the issue. If not, then theres a bigger problem.

 

I've been having the same problem since June 2010 on my '06 GC 4.7L. Trans always shifts fine when TOT is not on. Couldn't find answers by asking dealers or local shops or surfing web.

Bought an infrared thermometer and for awhile when light came on I pulled over and shot the ray at tranny pan. Temp was always at 180 degrees (give or take a few) which is spec. Had fluid/filters replaced at dealer in January and it still comes on at times. It seems to go in streaks: nothing for a few weeks and then on/off for a few weeks. No pattern.

Realized this is probably just another of the many electrical glitches our Jeeps have and decided not to worry about it any more. Have driven about 45-50000 miles since first incident and tranny seems fine so far. If I ever find an answer I will post it. In the meantime make sure your fluid is always full and only use ATF+4 and don't lose sleep over it.

getting the same message, started getting it a day after I gave a long boost to a friend's car, had negative side wire connected to his battery instead of metal surface, not sure if any of this played a role....

I also had a water pump installed 1 month prior, bought a Cardone water pump fro rockauto and brought it to some bozo mechanic shop, I wonder if things went wrong there.

I'm going to the dealer tomorrow morning, if anyone has any more clues as to what it could be...I got the 2nd message today, got the first 2-3 days ago. Transmission Over Temp. Jeep is running ok, but I may be noticing a slight louder than usual fan noise...I could be wrong there though, it could be me wanting to hear the problem... I hope it's electrical.

 

I have a 2009 JGC; last night I parked my car, came back 20 min later car wouldn't turover and TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP displaying on the control panel. Any ideas? I have read everything from starter to sensor. Nothing definitive. But my car won't start at all, not even a turn over. I tried getting a jump, headlights came on but that is it. It has been 23 hours since it began. Some people have gotten their car to start after several hrs., some have not had any issues with the car not starting. I can't believe this code comes on for so many different outcomes; all of these different problems do not raise the temp of the tranny or the temp of the sensor. It doesn't make any sense. Does anyone from Jeep have any ideas about this? I'm at such a loss. The dealership in my area doesn't have the greatest service dept. and I called to see if they could look at it, they said they might get to it tomorrow but that doesn't even seem to be useful from what I've read b/c the dealers don't know what the problem is either. UGGG!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

This happened to me with my 06 GC 4.7L.... was having the same issues and thought it was something with the engine. Turns out it was my Remote key that wasn't letting the car turn on, I used the spare one I had and bam it shot right back up with no issues what's so over, besides the Transmission over temp

 

When you try to start, do you hear a slight click from under the hood (from the starter relay). If you do hear that, then most probably your starter failed, or the wiring to/from it (corrosion at end lugs). If you don´t hear a click, then your starter relay could be faulty (sits in PDC under hood, just swap it with an equal relay from the PDC), or your park/neutral safety switch inside the transmission is faulty (messing with the shift lever sometimes helps), or your ignition switch is faulty. Ofcourse there is also some wiring which could be the problem or even a fuse.

 

Have you ever changed the battery? If not, could very well be that.

 

Was there ever any resolve to this trans over temp message I've been dealing with this message for a. While now?

 

Mine stopped. I had a few starter and battery gunk things cleaned it happened once more afterwards than it went away when the weather cooled off but who knows...

This looks like a more reliable fix though found it on another jeep site:

Any body with this concern should let the dealer know about STAR case # S1421000016 and have the Powertrain Control Module replaced. You have an 8 year/80,000 mile warranty.

How many of y'all replace the PCM and had success? I own a 2005 JGC 5.7l Hemi that throws Trans Over Temp on a daily basis.

 

Did you find a fix for this issue?

 

My fix was to replace the pcm. I only replaced the pcm after my hand held tuner stated that it was no longer able to communicate with the pcm or tcm. It was pretty much the last thing i replaced among a long line of things that finnaly seemed fix the trans overtemp issue. Its been about four months and it has never come back.

Overall, if its the pcm giving you trouble then i believe other signs of failure will eventually show up, if not already noticeble.

What i replaced: outcome:
1. Battery. No fix
2. Starter + wiring No fix
3. Transmission. No fix
4. Electronic shift module. No fix
5. Ignition module. No fix
6. Refurbished Pcm. Fixed

What other issues or signs of failure were you experiencing? The only issues that I've noticed on mine: radio/navigation occasionally turning on and off repeatedly (has done it 2 or 3 times), Auto High Beam option turning on and off on its own occasionally, and radiator fan on at full blast when transmission over temp message pops up. Also, the Service Tire Pressure System message is on because of a failing tpms sensor but that's been on for a while now.
I've also noticed (not sure if it's related) that on cold start ups it idles at around 7-800 rpm right away. Other cars I've had idle higher on cold start ups and the rpms gradually drop as the vehicle is warmed up. Not sure if that's just how the Hemi motor operates?

Trans Over Temp message has popped up 3 times already today. Looking at purchasing a refurb pcm but wanted to get a little more info from your experience before I ordered it. Thanks again and hope to hear from you.

 

Guy at the dealer told me to ignore the transmission over temp message if nothing else was going on.

It's been 3-4 years and nothing has happened so I just ignore it. It tends to come on once or twice a month every summer.

If your transmission oil isn't hot when it comes on I'd ignore it. You can even pull over and check the transmission oil pan with a heat gun I was told..

 

Our 2006 Hemi with about 180k miles started doing this about a week ago. No smell of burnt tran oil and tran oil at correct level. Took it to dealer and they were no help. I mentioned I read a out the PCM going bad and the service rep told me that the more I read the more reasons for the light illuminating I will find.
I am curious how much is a returned PCM and where do you get it programmed to your vehicle besides the dealer?

I just replaced the water pump car was running fine now I'm getting the transmission over temp light and my jeep cut off and wont start ,any suggestions .

 

I am getting this same message on my 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L. I got the message a while ago, took it to a transmission shop and they replaced the module/temperature sensor inside the transmission. And it came on the very next day. Went back to the shop and thrry let it sit and run for hours checking the temp and it never got hot. At first it only came on after a long drive then putting in in park and let it sit and run for a few minutes. It's now coming on almost every time we drive it. I also have the service tire pressure system warning that comes on every time I drive it too. This also came on just once in a while but now comes on every day now. Any suggestions or updates in this?

 

I have 05 Jeep GC with the 5.7 HEMI, 214k miles. I've had similar problems. The symptoms were sporadic. The AT gets stuck in 3rd while the FAN goes on max speed. Sometimes, I get the Trans Fluid overtemp msg. I get no codes from the scanner. When I disconnect the battery, OR remove the fuse for the PCM for few seconds, and reconnect, the AT runs just fine as long as I don't turn off the car. Sometimes I get a code for no communication with the TCM. That's a hint right there!

Here are the things I've until I've finally fixed the problem (pulled my hair on this one):
1. Changed trans fluid & filter, Replaced the pan with new one with plug. Forget about using the old pan. Just drill a hole in it to drain w/o the mess of spelling over. no good.
2. Replaced the valve body with rebuilt unit. no good.
3. Replaced broken ground straps to the PCM and under the car when AT is has one connected to chassis. no good.
4. Replaced Input/Output speed sensors attached to the AT. no good.
5. Attached a quick Battery disconnect switch. That was a good workaround as retting the PCM fixed the problem temporarily until next trip. Thought about adding a battery disconnect with remote.
6. I sent my PCM to a repair ship called "SIA Electronics" in eBay. They found no issue with the PCM. They charged me a diagnostics fee and sent it back as is. No good.
I'm pulling my hair cause I'm running out of ideas.
7. Took my Jeep to a Stealer dlr. They did the recalls and updated the software on my PCM for $175. no good.
8. Decided to buy a refurbished PCM from eBay seller called "importapart", and gave them the VIN & miles. I got the PCM in 2 days. Plugged it in in 5 mins, and wallah...!!!! It worked!. Took the truck on multiple drives and tried turning off and restarting. That worked!!

Bottom line, it was a faulty PCM all along. Even if you get no codes. A bad PCM has a mind of its own.
Beware tho. Those PCMs are expensive. I highly recommend buying it from a seller that does the programming for you for Plug & play. Do NOT buy a used PCM that requires you to take it to a dlr for programming.

 

Dats the message i get on the dashboard of my '05 WK: TRANSMISSION OVER TEMP, with a check engine light on. it happened this morning. then i turn the car off, and turn it on again the message was gone and the check engine light was gone as well. has anybody experienced this before? wat seems to be the issue here? i noticed that the car has been acting weird too. at red light, when the folks in front of me start moving. i hit the gas, the car starts moving but very slowly, so slow the people in front of me would be far in front and the people behind start honking pro'bly saying "ARE U GONNA START F** MOVING OR WAT?"

Anyone else replace pcm for a fix? My over trans over temp fan comes on right after starting the engine cold within a few minutes but no trans over temp message. Has not done this in a while ..... now its been steady last two days. Nothing over heating ... trans fluid good. When at idle i can rev the motor and fan will cut off for a few seconds and cut back on or if im driving i can accelerate and the fan will go off and come back on. Ideas? suggestions?

 

I had this overheating transmission problem for a couple of years and finally a mechanic found the problems. The condenser fan was not working as well as the fan clutch. Since that time this warning has not returned since these 2 parts were changed.

 

Just had a similar issue. 2005 V6 3.7L. Had it fixed by a shop and it worked fine for about 2 months. Lately the heat hasnt been gettung warm for 30+ min. Today the temp went from 0 to trans over temp within 10 min. Pulled the fuse for all that stuff, put it back and Tried to start it again and it didn't work until I tried again and had my foot on the gas a little. When it started the trans temp was right in the middle barely wavering AND the Heat decided to work. Any idea what's going on?
