In case you don’t want to read though this whole long winded post I will break the information into sections so you can just jump for section to section.
Disclaimer
I want to start out by saying this post if for information purposes, it is not meant start an argument for pros and con of OIL catch cans.
Or whether the 3.6L needs one or not.
BACKGROUND
This past weekend (April 15, 2017 to April 17, 2017) I had the displeasure or removing the upper intake manifold on my Pentastar so that I could replace a broken left motor mount.
Since I had to remove the intake manifold I decided to replace my spark plugs while I was in there ( I have owned the car for over 5 years now and it just hit 34,000 miles, so it wouldn’t hurt)
I also replaced all 6 fuel injectors after the dealership claimed that my slight left cylinder head ticking sound was being caused by an injector(which I knew it was not the cause of the noise but I was not going to let them generate revenue from me just to prove them wrong.) They claimed this had done this for other owners with the same complaint. Long story short tick is still there and I will be fighting with them to honor the cylinder head warranty before it expires on me.
PHOTOS
Sorry I did not take pictures of my upper intake manifold or my throttle body.
Injectors: The tips of the injector were covered in a combination of gritty oily residue, but there was nothing obstructing the nozzles as that portion was clean
Spark plugs: The spark plugs you could see that all the threaded areas of the plugs were consistently coated with motor oil
The plugs that had the highest build up were the #1 and #2 plugs as the intake ports are at the front of the manifold. (Opposite end from the throttle body)
MY SET UP:
I have had a Billet technology OIL catch can installed for almost three years, in mid 2014 I installed a catch can diffuser made by UPR that was designed specifically to fit the BT can. UPR also makes one that fits their can of similar design. The added restriction made the can more effective a removing oil from the intake tract.
I have an aftermarket intake installed: aFe Power Momentum GT intake with a Pro Dry S cone filter.
when installing the My catch can I tried looking for any tech pictures of the PCV system of the Pentastar but couldn't find any that made sense. Well the drawings make perfect sense now.
I even made a drawing for the connection that I made and shared it online.
HERE’s what I found out:
The PENTASTAR use TWO separate PCV valve outputs. There is one for each cylinder bank located at the rear of each cylinder head against the fire wall.
Right PCV output: Injects oil into the intake manifold just behind the throttle body
Left PCV output: Injects oil into the airbox and has to enter the intake manifold through the throttle body
Imagine how Stupid I felt when I realized that all the oil my catch can caught came from only one side of the engine. I felt even worse when I saw how much oil was in my intake tract.
I used CRC Mass Air Flow meter cleaner spray and some rags to clean all the oil from my throttle body. I cleaned the intake tube but there was not much that could do to clean my intake runners.
Summary:
If you are going to run Oil catch cans on your 2011 to 2015 3.6L Pentastar V6 you are going to have to run TWO or you will have to make them share the same catch somehow.
I am going to add a second catch can and when I do I will share pictures and the process of this in this thread.
