Has anyone else had this issue. Just noticed this on my 2018 GC. The display screen is starting to delaminate. See photo. It is not a crack, it looks like layers are separating (delaminating). Will they have to replace the whole unit or is the screen separate???

I just noticed this issue same thing my screen is delaminating at the top . My 36k warranty just expired last month I can't believe this crap radio what have you done about this issue ?

Please read the entire thing and lets get a recall issued so FCA will do the right thing and replace these!

So this is an issue across almost 10 different MOPAR vehicles over about 3-4 model years (so a lot of vehicles). Personally mine is on my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 29000 miles (Out of warranty by about 6 months). I have started an inquiry with the National Highway Transportation Safety Agency (NHTSA) - they are responsible for issuing recalls. @JeepCares and Uconnect are not going to help and you will be stuck with a $1200+ bill.

FCA KNOWS this is an issue and is doing nothing to rectify it for those of us out of warranty. They also are not providing any repair option other than full replacement which is ridiculous since there is a chip shortage and all that really needs to be done is replace the screen itself. LG makes the screen and also KNOWS this is an issue, they have discontinued the original model number and now make a new model number (see ebay link - 17-21 Replacement 8.4" Uconnect 4C UAQ LCD MONITOR Touch-Screen Radio Navigation | eBay) , so if you are going with the replace it yourself route make sure you order a screen that is the new model number (it will not bubble). The PN you want to order is LA084X01(SL)(02), the (01) is the defective screen and is discontinued by LG. Hence clearly it is a known issue and I am assuming that LG has paid FCA for their mistake and in turn FCA should pass that back the customer by replacing defective screens at no cost no matter warranty status!

Please everyone who wants to get FCA to do the right thing, go to the NHSTA website and start your own claim, with enough claims, they will have to start a full investigation into FCA. The website is: Report a Safety Problem | NHTSA . We have to show why it is a safety issues, and while it may not seem like an obvious safety issue, when the screen starts doing phantom touches it is very distracting to the driver. Also, as the glue melts, it leaks onto the wiring of all the components under the screen including the AC, all the parking sensor and traction control off controls.

Mine started bubbling slightly out of warranty. The unconnect specialist told me that they will only replace it for free if you are the first owner. Seems very unfair. This should be a recall.

NHSTA all the way !

That’s interesting cause mine is being replaced under warranty. Granted it’s factory certified preowned and it was literally two weeks after I purchased it, so maybe they pulled some strings to keep me happy.

I have a 2018 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk that is just beyond the 3 year warranty period but only has 30,000 miles. We took our Jeep into the local dealership due to the radio starting to randomly change between the bluetooth and auxillary settings. It also started randomly changing the radio settings due to the delamination of the surface. This appears to be somewhat of a common issue from reading previous posts. The customer service representative (CSR) at the dealership informed me that the radio displays are manufactured by United Radio. When they fail, the dealership removes them and returns them to United Radio to have them remanufactured. The CSR informed me the dealership then receives remanufactured radio displays from United Radio and re-installs them as replacements. The cost I was quoted for a remanufactured radio display was $1,066.13 including tax. The CSR informed me that the cost for a new (not remanufactured) radio display is over $2,000. Let the buyer beware!

That's for someone who doesn't do their homework and can't turn a screwdriver. I bought a NEW 2018 radio from a dealer online for a little less than $900. (I put it in my '17 GC) I put it in in less than an hour and I've never done it before.

SAME thing happened to me and my 2018..and the dealership will NOT help, because it's out of warranty after 35k. It's over $1000 to get it fixed. Im pretty freaking pissed off..I assumed since it's such a well known issue it would be considered a recall at this point. I adore my Jeep, but this makes me reconsider ever owning one again.
I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and my screen is delaminating. It changes radio stations loses GPS screen constantly and effects the backup camera. I have 50,000 miles and out of warranty. I look at this a a safety issue with blaring radio and losing GPS. Called my dealer Tate Motors in Frederick Md and he told me it wasn’t covered and the cost to replace is right at 1,000. It is obviously a manufacturing problem and should be on a safety recall list. I have owned four Jeep’s in my lifetime and this will be the last not that anyone cares. I think we should start a class action suit. Contact me at Youngfwy@gmail.com.

Hello guys. New the forum. My wife has a 2018 jeep grand cherokee Trail hawk. And her screen is changing songs and calling people on its own. And of course its out of warranty and she didn't get the extended warranty. Has anyone tried to work with a dealership and having it fixed or just pay out of pocket to have it replaced?? Thanks

Just got off the phone with Chrysler and they told me mine wasn’t covered. I would have thought a 2018 would still be under the 3 yr but I guess because I am at 60k miles it’s not covered. Wish I would have known when I bought this thing the tiny little bubble at the very top corner would turn into a HUGE issue. Any suggestions for NON warranty repairs?? I can’t spend $2500 to get this fixed. Any suggestions would be appreciated

We get it but no need to repeat the same post 3 times in the same thread. Did you see the link to the eBay site for a replacement screen? They are a lot cheaper than $1,000 for a whole new radio.

Also, welcome aboard.

2018 GC as well and mine is going nuts. I can’t even turn the screen on anymore bc it goes so berserk that it will change to the climate control and the heat starts to blast or the heated seats come on or the clock settings try to change. It’s such a distraction but I need to be able to use my freaking climate controls and don’t need a heated seat or heated steering wheel being turned on when it’s still hot here in TN. Definitely filing a claim NHSTA in the morning. This is ridiculous and unsafe!!!

I am dealing with this now, they said they will have to replace the entire screen

I am new to the Forum. Posts #102 and #106 are right on the money. My 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problems as described here by many people. The dealership acts as if they know nothing about the problem. You have to get a diagnostic done for a $100 fee, to tell you the touchscreen needs to be replaced. They ordered a replacement unit and installed it at a cost of $1100. It comes with a 2 year warranty. I requested to have the bad part returned to me, they said there was a $1000 core charge, which is because the replacement is rebuilt not new. I assumed the replacement touchscreen would be checked for full functionality by the service tech that installed it. I was wrong, I now must return for a third service appointment for this touchscreen issue. It will not display the "Vehicle User Guide", Navigation will not accept a street address and the "Activate Services" comes back with "Connection Error". My guess is when I take it in tomorrow, they will want to charge me for a diagnostic evaluation and then tell me the touchscreen needs to be replaced again. Once I have a fully functional touchscreen, I will never return to the dealer unless there are no other options. I am disappointed with Jeep/Mopar because they installed a defective unit in my vehicle at the factory. They then charge you to replace it and pretend like they don't know what is wrong with the touchscreen when you bring in the vehicle with this problem.

I'll definitely keep any eye on this thread. Is 2018 the only believed affected model year and is there any trend between early 2018 and late 2018 builds? My 2018 Limited doesn't have the issue, yet, and I hope it never does but the link above to the replacement screen is useful...still expensive though. Are there instructions to replace the screen only...how much longer does it take than replacing an entire unit?

The dealership replaced it in just over 30 minutes, however they did not check for full functionality. From what I have read on this problem it affects older Grand Cherokee's as well and also Dodge Ram and Chrysler. All with the 8.4 Touchscreen. There are YOUTUBE videos showing how to remove it and take it apart and also how to remove the gel which melts causing the delamination and then reinstalling it yourself. There is a place in Florida "Infotainment Group" that will refurbish your unit if you remove it and send it to them, $650 plus shipping.

Mine is MY2018 built in September 2017. So early model year with delaminating screen.

Kelly Jeep in eastern PA replaced mine for free. Might be because I just brought it last month, might be warranty, either way, they’re awesome. Having some Uconnect problems getting the new one set up, but thats more a service issue than hardware.

Update!
I took my 2018 Grand Cherokee into the dealership this morning to address the problems with the replacement 8.4 touchscreen they installed on August 20th. They did not charge me to evaluate the above mentioned problems. They told me they had contacted U-Connect concerning the problems with the unit, U-Connect told them it was "Not Registered" and that is why it was not working correctly. That just sounds like an excuse to me, the replacement unit now needs to be replaced. The dealership has ordered me another replacement touchscreen and should arrive in 7-10 days, since it has the 2-year warranty it will not cost me anything this time. The good thing is I am retired and have the time to take care of this ongoing problem, if I was still working this would have been a hassle. I hope my second replacement touchscreen does not have problems.
