If you have the 245 transfer case (which I am guessing you do, since you have a low range!), DO NOT listen to the guy at NAPA...he is certainly incorrect and putting in ATF will do very bad things.

The service 4WD message comes on when there is a fault in the system - not when the fluid needs to be replaced (although replacing it could solve the problem).

As stated above, more details about what you drive will help narrow it down. But, a good place to start would be to check transfer case fluid level.

Usually when the message pops up when shifting to low it is a result of a faulty shift motor, but it could be a whole bunch of things.

And what does your owner's manual indicate the t-case uses for lube? And if you don't have an OM, have you looked at Jeep.com for one?

I do it all the time, don't see it on the restricted list...

 

The WJ NV247 uses the special mopar fluid, which is Mobil 424. This last one is easier to get in some places.

Hey Frango, my transfer case they say at the chrysler dealer is NV245, so they say I have to use nV245 or NV247 fluid. My Jeep is 2005 WK, thanks for the info though.

 

Hi, I'm back with a question. We've been talking about getting Mopar NV245/247 transfer case fluid for my 2005 grand cherokee. jeffreybehr told me in a post above to check what my owners manual says I should use in my jeep, the book says I need to use Mopar ATF+4 Transmission Fluid in my Transmission and Transfer case. The dealer usually has these products for $15 to $20 dollars a bottle. What is the best ATF+4 equivalent that I can use for these 2 parts that meet the Mopar standards?

The owners manual is not correct, by reason of omission. It does not specifically state ATF+4 for the NV245, it simply says "Transfer Case - ATF+4", which is for the NV140 only.

DO NOT use ATF+4 for the NV-245 t-case!!!

The 2005 owners manuals have never been updated since being issued in 2004. But the dealer online factory service manuals are constantly updated in years following...


From the latest revision of the 2005 Jeep factory service manual:

TRANSFER CASE

- Recommended lubricant for the NV140 transfer case is Mopar® ATF+4, Automatic Transmission Fluid.

- Recommended lubricant for the NV245 transfer case is Mopar® NV245/247 Transfer Case Fluid (1.8L / 3.8 pts. / 1.9 quarts).

 

This sounds strange. NV 245 or NV 247 fluid is P/N 05016796AB and is not ATF +4. I know that on the WJ ATF +4 was.used in the beginning, but because of clutch chatter they changed to the special mopar fluid.

 

Thank you both for your answer. Iwent under the jeep yesterday and looked at the transfer case there was a silver and red round label, couldn't see it good cause of where it was, but I was able to see J245, is this the model number of the T-Case?

Thanks for your advice. I haven't done it yet but I intend to check the fluid level in the T-case. But a mechanic friend of mine was under the jeep and told me to put it in 4x4, he held the T-case motor and said it didn't do anything, no vibration or movement. Could the motor be bad?

 

I know this is an old post but for the sake of accuracy since it still pops up when you search for "Transfer case fluid" there have been some developments in alternate fluids for the NV245. Mobilfluid 424 is what the Mopar part number is. Chevron THF1000 cross-references with the 424, and of course AMSOIL sells an oil specifically for this T-case. Sorry for lack of references,the baby's crying. Hope this helps.
