Hello Team Members,
As some of us have some problems with updating uconnect 8.4AN, I describe my problem:

1. I downloaded update 17.43.01 - UCONNECT_8.4AN_RA4_17.43.01_MY15_NAFTA
2. Inserted with engine on running USB sticker 16GB, clean, with 2 unpacked files
3. Radio asked me if I want to make update, so yes
4. I encountered the error (around 67% of total update) “Sierra Wireless: bolo file install failed”. The update process went smoothly up until Unit number 10. Unit Name: Embedded Air Card, the process was stuck at 1%, and eventually timed out with the error “Sierra Wireless: bolo file install failed”.
5. After the Failed Uconnect 8.4 Software Update, the update process would loop while the USB flash drive was inserted. When I removed the USB flash drive, I was constantly prompted to "Please Insert Update USB". It appeared the failed Uconnect update had bricked my Uconnect 8.4.

I tried as some suggestions:
1. Remove USB Drive while Uconnect is checking the integrity of the ISO (during Pre-Update ISO validation)
2. Remove car battery

Any ideas how to take it back to run? I don`t think that ASO will change my radio for free because is not under warranty now. But they might have some extra procedure for this?

I did not inserted any pictures but this is exactly what is here:
Recover a Bricked Uconnect 8.4 after failed update

Please help and thank you.

I Tried to update my 2015 several at total of 20 times and could not get it to update. Called Uconnect and they told me to bring it to the dealership, which I did and they told me it was bricked. I was already to put in an aftermarket radio because I didn't want any part of a system that can be bricked for simply trying to perform an upgrade. Uconnect paid for my replacement and the dealership replaced my 8 inch radio on Uconnect's dime. I am still not a big fan of Uconnect so I guess we will see how long it will last

How did you convince UConnect to pay for it out of warranty? They certainly had no interest in helping me with my 2014 JGC. Reconditioned radio cost me $700 or so. Neither UConnect or the horrible dealership I have to deal with were really willing to help at all, except to tell me my radio was junk. It did occur to me that UConnect shared some responsibility given that they instructed me to update the radio, and when I followed their instructions to do so, it fried the radio instead. Somehow I don't think they will accept any responsibility.

After telling them that I should not be held responsible for their update ruining the radio. I told them that If they had put up a disclaimer that if you try the update and 20 percent of the time you will brick your radio I would not have tried the update and I ranted and raved how I have been working with computers for 25 years and I have never seen a device that gets bricked after a failed update and that why can't I just wipe the hard drive clean and start with a fresh install. I did open a case with them and I told them I would be switching to an after market radio if they failed to help me. I did have to pay the $160 fee to have the dealership tell me that my radio is a paper weight. My new radio has the new 8.4 update and it seems to be working ok so far.

Yeah, our situations are identical. I had no idea of the risk I was taking by doing a simple update, which normally is the responsible thing to do. I also had to pay a considerable sum to have the dealership try the exact same things that I did to try to get the loop to stop, and then to have them tell me after about half an hour that they tried everything they could and I needed a new radio. Then they told me they would have to order the radio up front and I would have to wait for a week or two for it to come in. Naturally, the looping radio finally drained my battery while I was waiting for the reconditioned radio to come in, so I let the vehicle sit dead for a couple days before finally getting the ok that the radio had arrived and had my car towed to the dealership. All in all, the fiasco cost me around $1,000. The reconditioned radio works great now, which is good because there is no warranty. Now what do we do the next time we see a message that a software update is available?

I don't know if you have the navigation software connected on yours where you get the software updates automatically. Mine is disconnected from their network the only reason I tried the update is because my radio would sometimes take a while to turn on when I was driving sometimes 5 mins or longer. So I tried the update with a usb stick. I will not be doing anymore updates to the system. I would turn off your updates so it will no longer look for them or try to download them. If I have any more problems I am going to to go to a nice pioneer radio I have heard the android auto system works pretty good, and you would still keep the climate controls for your radio.

I do have navigation, but the reason I wanted to do the update was that my radio had been acting up with slow starts and a message about my vehicle phone requiring service. They were annoying but I would have gladly tolerated those issues to avoid the update disaster. I do like the UConnect interface and the radio seems to run half of my electronics, so I was reluctant to introduce an aftermarket brand to the mix. I am hoping my reconditioned radio lasts as long as I still own the vehicle. I am over 100,000 miles now so I will probably upgrade in the next year or so. I would still like my $700 back from UConnect though, and that would definitely influence my decision as to whether to trust Jeep again on my next go round.

Don't have a Jeep, but do have a Ram 1500 with the Uconnect 8.4. Ran into the same issue as everyone else, Aircard module failed to update and stuck in a never ending loop. Been scouring the message boards for solutions and none of them were able to work for me except one. This morning I removed the radio from the dash and took the unit apart down to the circuit board level. Sprayed some contact cleaner in every connection port then re-assembled. Once reinstalled back into the truck, radio updated via the USB without issue; made it past the failed Aircard stage. Radio booted back up and is functioning same as prior to update. System info shows newest firmware version. Wireless unit still not working (store and assist apps give error messages), but at least everything else is functional again.

I just got my denial from UConnect/Mopar for reimbursement of the cost of replacing my radio. It's hard to believe that they have been putting out this update for so long without warning owners that they may be damaging their vehicle even if they follow the instructions. Clearly they have quite a racket going by telling people to update, wrecking their radios, then charging them for replacement rather than repairing. The dealership doesn't attempt any kind of fix, the only option to get my car working again was to replace the radio.

I had the same issue with the software looping at update #11 1%. I tried disconnecting the battery. I tried the hard reboot. I took it to the dealer and they wanted over $900 to install a new unit.

Nothing worked until I turned the truck off and forgot to remove the USB drive. I did not start the truck again until 2 days later - and the update was done. It works fine now, but I still periodically get the error message about the phone needing service, but I just ignore it now.

I have had the same issues that almost everyone on this post is texting about. I tried 5 times at my location (about 4:00pm PST) in the mountains with no success. I even drove down town to a wide open parking lot and still had trouble. I gave up and made an appointment with the dealer. I tried again with a different usb drive and new download early in the morning the next day and to my surprise the system was all uploaded. Like others have mentioned maybe its the location or the time of day that effects how successful the download is. Either way I kept trying and finally was successful. I did have a side effect though. My odometer kept blinking on and off. I was soooo disappointed but I parked the car and came back a little while later and to my delight everything was back to normal. No more updates for me!!!

I have found in the seven years of UConnect use that these updates often take a day or two to completely work in. The system is so intertwined and complex that it seems you have to access the various functions so they can interact with the firmware changes and then interact with other features before it completely permeates the system. I only had trouble with one update, one of the 15.xx.xx ones, and it completely wiped out my NAV on the RA4 system, requiring a replacement head unit which luckily the Lifetime MaxCare took care of, along with replacing the replacement head unit which died about a month later. No problems since.

Having this same problem!!
What started as a navigation issue (always being about 10-15 miles off) turned into me wishing I would've just left it alone!!
** Navigation issue wasn't consistent. It seemed it was correct in big cities**

Steps I did:
1. Went to Uconnect Software Update site, entered VIN, downloaded update to external usb drive
2. Tried to install like 20+ times, always stuck on step 11 (Air Cellular), 1% or 67% of total update
3. Drove around (even to big city areas) hoping it would complete step 11
4. Attempted to pull out usb at Step 1 (this never worked)
5. Reformatted usb drive to Fat32, then tried steps 1 & 2 again

Nothing works for me. ARGGHHHHH

UPDATE 11/23: Just called Uconnect, they gave me a case #, and told me to bring it into the nearest dealership and they would cover the replacement.

I understand your frustration. I found it pretty damn furstrating as well.

Here's what I experienced:

I tried to update with a USB. It failed at Section 11 with the bolo error.

The system would tell me to remove the USB then wait for a couple minutes and it would ask for the USB again. This is the loop we all experience.

I saw this thread and read that some of the other folks suggested that we keep trying to upgrade.

As was suggested, while I was out driving around I'd let the update run. So I'd put in the USB when the system asked for it then when it got to the error message I'd take out the USB and then start all over again. Then the next day I'd do the same thing.

On about the 4th day or so of doing this, I went through the update process while out driving around about 4 times before it suddenly took. I looked down and it was on Section 12 and then it completely and I had my screen back.

So that's what I mean.

When you get to Section 11 and it fails, experience was it'll say remove the USB. When I did that I saw an hour glass with a message saying wait 2 - 5 minutes while the system resets. Then it asks for the USB again and you repeat the process.

Can you tell me what happened for them to replace it?? I’m in the same predicament, I go on Monday to the dealership, Uconnect said they would possibly pay as well.
